Set a few years after the second world war has ended. Son of a tradesman, Will Graham, meets a Count from across the sea and falls into an illegal affair. (Beyond the pale is another term for taboo, as homosexual relationships were against the law in this era, and were either punishable by prison or you were to undergo "treatment" to "cure" yourself of homosexual desires. Most men took the treatment, which were basically hormones and in most cases meant that they grew breasts. Many men killed themselves because of this suffering, Sir Alan Turing is one of the most famous men to which this happened.)
