Rust shrugs in that small way of his: a quick tilt of his heart, tug in his brow before he says dryly, “Given your first marriage I wouldn’t think you so eager to fall into those trappings again.”

Huh, he chuckled to himself. Maybe Rust did have spiders for blood and beetles for bones, now that, if anything, would help explain his prickly nature. He was neither vicious nor kind. He just was. Rust was hard to explain to those that did not know him. Marty had learned to read the different tensions and nuances that held the other together and tore him apart all the same. Rust would pick a fight with the sky if he didn't like its shade of blue.
Caught in his musings the detective failed to notice the shift in his surroundings. A shift so subtle he would have trouble catching it even if his ears had been pricked the whole time. The woods seemed to gobble him up, ferns licked his calves and the lowest branches threatened to snatch his remaining hair off of his head that he had worked so hard to grow.

Their favorite habit since making a home together has been smoking weed in the sunroom at twilight. Marty hates how many cigarettes Rust smokes, even after cutting back. The taste is always sour on his tongue when they kiss. But he’s been respectful of the fact that tobacco and nicotine are nowhere near as bad as the alcohol and the harder shit Crash was into. Besides, the number of cigs diminished compared to what he could put away in the front seat in ’95. Marty doesn’t keep alcohol in the house anymore, thinks both of their livers are penning them thank you letters for being spared cirrhosis. Rust was lucky to dry out in a coma and is doing his damnedest to stay off that particular wagon, so the smoke takes some of the edge off.
