Homicide Detective Kenshi Takahashi loves his job, even though it's been kind of dull lately. Things take an unexpected turn when Kenshi arrives on the crime scene of his latest case, only to recognize it as replica of a book he read. And said book was written, coincidentally, by his favorite author: Johnny Cage.
Johnny Cage is bored and, truth be told, kinda desperate. After killing off the protagonist of his most successful book series, he’s going through the worst writing slump he’s ever faced. He finds new fuel and a muse when he gets summoned by Detective Takahashi to get questioned regarding an ongoing investigation - to which, much to Kenshi's horror, Johnny takes part as a consultant.
Juggling between nosy families, literary alter egos and a serial killer from the past with direct links to Kenshi's family, Johnny and Kenshi will have to face their most complicated case: deal with their feelings and one another.

Johnny Cage has made a few mistakes in his time: getting drunk and having a one-night stand while on the outs with Cris (the first time), getting back together with Cris, and Ninja Mime 4. Really, only two of those are real mistakes and one is just a happy accident. The happy accident, the happiest bit of his first mistake, is that the one-night stand turned into his daughter, Cassie. If nothing else, she's a point of pride for Johnny because she's such an awesome kid. Even if he's screwed up everything else in his life, he still has her. He would do anything for her, even give up his prized possession, Sento; he just never expected that he'd have to have that fight. Let alone have it with the only other person who could call Cassie his.

Determined to settle a debt with her fence, Aspen sails to a long since abandoned island to steal and sell its artifacts. But things become complicated when she encounters a deadly sorcerer inhabiting the island's temple.
Although he considers killing her, he instead decides to make her a deal (and a servant). He will protect her and help her 'deal' with the fence and his lackeys. In exchange, she must pose as his consort and spy on his enemies when he attends balls and other events hosted by the emperor. Sleeping together would be a side benefit too, and something to add authenticity.
His intent is to kill the emperor and userp his throne, but Aspen cannot trust she will be truly safe or needed anymore when he succeeds.
Her only hope is to try and earn his favor and his trust. Even if it means giving up her freedom and her very soul to him. Unless, all he seeks from her is her heart and loyalty as a partner in crime and treason.
