Winning the Peace: The Alpha Quadrant after the Dominion War by EmperorNorton150
Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
15 Aug 2024
Summary
"It's not enough to win a war. Anyone can do that. It's what comes next that's important." - Min Zefe, President of the United Federation of Planets, 2375
The Dominion War (2373-2375) was the single most destructive conflict in the known history of the Federation, and eventually entangled virtually every major power in the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Quadrants of the Milky Way. Though the UFP and its allies were able to win a decisive victory on the battlefield, that was only the beginning of the long, weary struggle to build a new and better Galaxy.
Luckily, that's what the Federation specializes in.

Summary
On Cardassia, going to this kind of trouble would be a clear signal of courtship. But then, on Cardassia their weekly arguments about literature would be the most outrageous, unambiguous flirtation.
After the events of The Wire, Garak and Bashir have lunch and argue about literature. This time it's different.

Summary
"You do know an awful lot about me. It's sweet, actually, how protective you are about Elim." He favored Tain with one of his dazzling smiles.
"I'm protective of my investments. Even in exile, Elim continues to be useful to me. And he's about to be very useful to you too."
"Forgive me, I'd thought you were insinuating he'd been plenty useful to me in the past," Julian said. "Or was it the other way around?"
"I'm glad you find it so amusing. Elim's quite sentimental, you know. I'll be sure to tell him how you've been talking about him like a plaything that amuses you."

This series is amazing, and is right up there with id say the best works the star trek fandom has to offer. Im simply in love with this authors ability to make me so vested in these characters, this world, this story. I really believed in the love story not only with serot, but garak, as well. And im sure the business with serot being garak and repressing it sure wasnt easy to flesh out and write the nuances that come with being in love with the same person but not but also yes(?). Wonderfully done, and I love how bashir and serots relationship evolved into bashir and garak. Though very different, still lovable all the same. It seems like the author has stopped posting in 2016, which is truly a shame, but these 223k words are wonderful as is. Ill still be subscribing on the slim chance we get updates, but let it be known im quite happy with whag we have of this fic. It truely is a beauty to behold

Summary
When Garak arrives at Internment Camp 371, Enabran Tain brings up the topic of Dr. Bashir. Their conversation inadvertently changes the course of events between the two lunch partners, deepening their bonds and introducing new elements that neither of them are able to deny any longer.
A prison romance.
Per Xenobotanist tradition, expect loads of angst, fluff, and smut.-

Julian understood. He had his own noise. He was constantly thinking, counting. Always counting. He couldn’t help it. His mind was always working. If there was nothing to do- well, there was always something to do. He always found something. A formula to rework, a book he’d memorised that he could recite back to himself. He never forgot anything he learned, and he could never switch off.
The way Garak described it made him realise how much it sounded like hell.

And he was trapped on a Romulan warbird with a friend he’d betrayed for a man that would kill him and Mila and Julian, about to start a war. Waves of claustrophobia washed over him, and he indulged the panic because it was easier than guilt.
--
Garak breathed in sharply out of nowhere and stood up, trying to compose himself into his usual mask of calm placidity. Every few breaths he would close his eyes, wince and try again.“You don’t have to do that,” Julian quietly said. “There’s no-one watching.”

Summary
In a universe where Garak remains the perfect instrument of the Obsidian Order, Julian Bashir becomes an exile. Cardassia Prime is the last place anyone would expect him to survive—and the first place that might break him.
Fleeing the Federation under the shadow of treason, Julian’s desperate escape lands him in the heart of Cardassian power. Enabran Tain, the master puppeteer of the Obsidian Order, has taken an interest in the young doctor—an interest that binds him to Garak, Tain’s most loyal operative.
But loyalty on Cardassia is a weapon as much as a virtue, and Garak is as much interrogator as savior. As Julian fights to retain his humanity, the truths he uncovers may cost him the very thing he’s struggling to keep.
In the labyrinth of Cardassian intrigue, survival is only the beginning. To endure, Julian must decide: is he willing to become the monster they expect—or something far worse?

Summary
Garak stared at the razor in his hand, its edge gleaming faintly. He could feel the heat of Julian’s skin beneath his fingers, fragile but alive. His breath caught in his throat, but he forced himself to steady his hand. If he could mend torn fabric, he could do this.
Slowly, breathing through the tightness in his chest, he let the razor blade glide, as if it were a pair of scissors through Bolian silk.

Summary
AU after season 3. Garak is killed during the Obsidian Order's attack on the Founders' homeworld; at least, that's what everyone believes. When Julian is captured by the Dominion and sent to Internment Camp 371, he's shocked to see the former tailor again.

Summary
A companion piece to the TV show, this is everything that should/would have happened between Garak and Bashir on DS9 if the 90s had been ready for it. Each work is situated in or around the events of an episode of the show.
Early works *should* make enough sense as stand-alone short stories to be read as such, especially for DS9 fans familiar with the episodes they happen in/around, but reading chronologically will offer the reader a richer view of their evolving relationship. Later works increasingly rely on understanding the larger arc to make much sense.

Summary
Garak and Julian work to get the measure of one another, each of them trying to see what's hidden under the other man's skin.
Once upon a time, Julian imagined he might do better on a planet other than Earth, that he was a sort of modern-day changeling child, abandoned on a planet he wasn't fit for.
It cut at the time that it wasn't true - it cuts all the deeper when, some years down the line, Earth sees fit to abandon him to someone else's planet after all.
