Erik Lehnsherr has been locked away in a plastic cell for 20 years. The only time he is ALLOWED outside is when Trask and Stryker run their experiments on him. And they have him run missions for them. He assumes everyone he knows is dead. So he gave up hope that anyone was going to save him. Or at the very least kill him to spare him from fate. Then one day a powerful mutant with 3 minions arrives and saves him. Erik thought it was the happiest day of his life. However, when he found out that not only were the x-men were alive.
