it's so important that the characters are not just misunderstood, that they actually did a lot of bad shit and aren't great people. it would be much easier to understand and like them if they were the "asshole with a heart of gold" type, that's simpler, but this series isn't about that. this series is about the people who are written off as unsalvageable, who aren't easily digestible, who do things you might even consider unforgivable. it puts all of that on display in the first book and challenges you to give them a chance anyway. to understand them. because ultimately what aftg is trying to say is that no one is unsalvageable, no one should be written off, and that everyone deserves the chance to be better, whatever "better" means for them, no matter how many chances they need.
