THE MALAYS
THE EARLIEST SETTLERS
The Malays were the last settlers in the Philippines. They
came in three waves. The first wave (200 BC) were the
head-hunting Malays who were the ancestors of
Bontoks, Ifugaos, Ilongots, Kalingas, Tingguians. The
second wave (13th century A.D.) were the alphabet-
using Malays and were the ancestors of the Tagalogs,
Ilocanos, Pampangas, Bicolanos, Visayans, and other
Christian Filipinos. The third and last wave (13-16th
century AD) were the Muslim Malays and their
descendants are the Muslims in Mindanao.

2. Muslim Filipinos which include the
Maranaos of Lanao, Tausogs of Jolo,
Yakans of Basilan, Samals of Sulu, Ilajons
and Sanguir of Southern Mindanao and
Jama Mapun of Cagayan islands. The
people in Mindanao were converted into
Islam in the 13th century. Their Holy Book is
Q'uran and their Holy Law is the Shari’ah.

3. Indigenous Filipinos or cultural communities
which comprised 9% of the population. Some of
them are the Tingguians, Agtas, Mangyans,
Tagbanuas, Gaddangs, Palawanos, Bontocs,
Manobos, Bukidnons, Bagobos, Bilaans,
Tirurays, Subanons. Most of them lived in the
highlands and have retained their ethnicity in
spite of the influx of Western and Asian culture.

4.Chinese Filipinos
who belonged to the
minority because they
constitute only 1-2% of
the population. Most of
them reside in urban
areas because they
