Topic Main Ideas Supporting Detail Paragraph

Reading comprehension is the ability to process written text, understand its meaning, and to
integrate with what the reader already knows.

In academic terms, a text is anything that conveys a set of meanings to the


person who examines it. You might have thought that texts were limited to
written materials, such as books, magazines, and newspapers.

As technology developed, the term ‘text’ widened to include words and


content on websites and social media as well as text messages. People now
even refer to film, art, photographs and symbol such as emoji as text even
though they use images rather than words to convey meaning.
Text Types! ● Depending upon their purpose,
there are 7 types of text.

styles and structures. For
example: Narrative as a form of
text that tells a story of
recounts events.

● The types are: Narrative,


Descriptive, Expository,

Recount, Report.

What is the purpose of Understanding Text!

● It helps us understand the text’s intentions,


trustworthiness, and bias.

● It helps us to create texts that are most effective,


depending upon the purpose

Topics
Details, major and minor, support
The topic is the broad, the main idea by telling how,
general theme or message. It what, when, where, why, how
is what some call the subject. much, or how many.

Main Ideas
Locating the topic, main idea,
and supporting details helps
The main idea is the "key
you understand the point(s) the
concept" being expressed.

Paragraph

a The main idea is the most


important piece of information
the author wants you to know
A paragraph is a group of about the concept of that
sentences related to a paragraph
particular topic, or central
theme. Every paragraph has
a key concept or main idea.

There are 3 point in a paragraph:


c Introduction (main ideas)
transitional (supporting detail),
and summarizing.
EXAMPLE!!

My grandmother's 7-layer cookie recipe is one that must be followed


exactly to ensure a successful turnout. First, pour melted butter into
a baking dish. Next, sprinkle finely crushed graham cracker crumbs
on top of the melted butter. Afterward, evenly distribute chocolate
chips and butterscotch chips in the baking dish. Next, sprinkle
shredded coconut overtop the chips. Then, evenly pour one can of
sweetened condensed milk over the previous ingredients. Lastly,
sprinkle chopped walnuts on top of the milk. After baking at 350
degrees for 30 minutes and allowing the cookies to cool completely,
they are ready to be cut and enjoyed.
