ZERO BUDGET NATURAL

FARMING

SUBMITTED BY

HISTORY:
Man behind the Zero Budget Natural Farming-Mr. Subhash
Palekar
He studied natural system and verified natural process of forest on
his farm for 6 years.
He has been given the title ‘ Krishi ka Rishi.’
Has done about 154 projects in these 6 years,he got the package of
practices about ZBNF, which is given to the farmers all over India.
He has also been awarded as:
Basava Shri Award (2005)
Gopal Gaurav Award (2007)
Padma Shri (2016)
WHAT IS ZBNF?
Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) is a farming practice
that believes in natural growth of crops without adding any
fertilizers and pesticides or any other foreign elements. The
word Zero Budget refers to the zero net cost of production
of all crops (inter crops, border crops, multi crops). The
inputs used for seed treatments and other inoculations are
locally available in the form of cow dung and cow urine.
A ZBNF practicing farmer has lower cost of inputs and thus
has better capacity to increase the incomes. At the same
time, ZBNF crops helps in retaining soil fertilizing and is
climate change resilient.
UNIQUE QUALITIES OF ZBNF
98%of nutrients are taken from air, water
and solar energy
In ZBNF nothing is purchased from out side
Remaining nutrients are taken from soil that
are avilable free of cost
All things that are required for growth are
available around the root zone of plants
PRINCIPLES
 Natural input – To use available
resources in nature and lead to a non
toxic production.
 Low input Farming – No use of
chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
 Mulching – To protect soil and
create biological processes in the
soil.
 Multi Cropping – It minimizes the
risk in crop failure becomes
continuity in income source.
FOUR PILLARS/WHEELS OF ZERO
BUDGET NATURAL FARMING :
Bijamruth
Jeevamruth
Mulching
Whapasa - moisture
BIJAMRUTH
 Bijamruth is for treating seed,
seedlings and planting
material. The micro organisms
found in cow dung are
cultured in the form of
bijamruth and applied to the
seeds as inoculum.
 It is effective in protecting
young roots from fungus as
well as from soil-borne and
seedborne diseases.
JEEVAMRUTH
Jeevamruth is a fermented microbial culture to increase the microbial
and earthworm activity in the soil. During the 48 hour fermentation
process, the bacteria in the cow dung and urine multiply by feeding
the pulse flour in the solution. Virgin soil is added to inoculate native
bacteria and other organisms. Jeevamruth helps to prevent plant
diseases. This is required in the first 3 years of the transition.
Preparation: Take 200 lit of water + 10 Kg fresh cow dung + 10 lit
aged cow urine + 2 Kg of Jaggery + 2 Kg of pulse flour + handful of
soil from farm-bund. Stir and let it ferment for 48 hours. Now
Jeevamruth is ready.
Application: 200 liters of Jeevamruth is sufficient for one acre of land.
Apply twice a month with irrigation water or as 10% foliar spray.
MULCHING
 Soil Mulch: Protects topsoil during
cultivation and tilling. It promotes
aeration and water retention in the soil.
Avoid deep ploughing.
 Straw Mulch: It is covering the soil with
dead matters of any living organism.
(plants, animals, etc).–dry organic
material decomposes and form humus.
 Live Mulch: It is with symbiotic
intercrops and mixed crops with monocots
and dicots grown in the same field.
Legumes are nitrogen-fixing plants.
Monocots supply other elements like
potash, phosphate and sulphur.
WHAPASA-MOISTURE
Whapasa is the condition
where both air and water
molecules are present in the
soil. Reduce irrigation - only
at noon - in alternate
furrows.
In this condition there is
mixture of 50% air and 50%
water vapours in the soil
particle cavities.
PEST MANAGEMENT IN ZBNF
Agniastra
Neemastra
Bramhastra
AGNIASTRA
It is composed of 10 litre
Local Cow Urine and 1 Kg
Tobacco, 500gm of Green
Chili, 500 Gram Local
Garlic, 5 Kg Neem leaves
pulp (crushed in urine). For
spraying, 2 l Brahmastra is
taken in 100 l water.
It is effective against the
pests like Leaf Roller, Stem
Borer, Fruit borer, Pod borer
NEEMASTRA
It is made up of local
cow urine (5 l), cow dung
(5kg) and neem leaves
and neem pulp (5kg)
fermented for 24 hrs.
It is used for sucking
pests & Mealy Bug.
BRAMHASTRA
It is prepared by neem
leaves, custard apple leaves,
lantern camellia leaves,
guava leaves, pomegranate
leaves, papaya leaves and
white dhatura leaves
crushed and boiled in urine.
It is used to control all of
the sucking pests, pod borer,
fruit borer etc.
VARIOUS PRODUCTION PRACTICES IN
ZBNF:

Tillage
Crop rotation
Seed quality
Crop residue management
Inter cropping
INM practices
CONCLUSION
Zero Budget Natural Farming has undoubtedly made
an indelible mark on farming in India.
ZBNF saves on input investments like fertilizers and plant
protection chemicals
Because of continuous addition of soil it improves the soil
fertility which helps in maintaining the soil health
It is economically viable venture of farming system
ZBNF has been emerged as a farming model for small
and marginal farmers to overcome the farming distress
and sustaining the livelihood and keeping the health of
family on top priority
