Landscape Architecture
Landscaping :-
Is the developing of outdoor
spaces to provide various
amenities, privacy, Comfort,
beauty, and ease of
maintenance.
It may involve: lawns, shrubs,
plants, and flower structures
such as seating pools, rocks,
gardens, trellises or pergolas
and paved surface.
Elements of Design
• Line – Continuity of a
landscape….Flow of the
landscape
• Straight lines = direction
change
• Curved lines= relaxed
movement
Principles of Design
• Balance: Even distribution of materials on opposite sides of a central
axis.
• Symmetric – both sides are identical (mirror image).
• Asymmetric – visual weight on opposite sides is the same, but
materials used and their placement may vary.
• Proximal/Distal – Same as asymmetric with depth in the field of
vision added.
Symmetrical Balance
• Mirror image
• Used more for formal
architecture
• Visual weight is
balanced
Asymmetrical Balance
• Visual weight is
balanced but not
mirror images
• Used more in
informal
architecture
Proximal / Distal:
Simplicity
Repetition
Repeating shapes helps
maintain simplicity
Focalization
• Visual importance
• One item appears to dominate
• Don’t have competing focal points
• Draws attention
