Activities Flight and Air

Week 8
Hot air balloon from plastic bags
Use a simple plastic
supermarket bag and hairdryer
to inflate the bag. Let it go and
watch what happens.

Can you tell me what is

happening?
Teacher notes: Hot air balloon
The bag inflates with the air but
because it is warm the bag rises
above the cooler air in the room.
If you are working with small
children you can talk about the
molecules of air getting hotter
and moving quicker and making it
rise in the air.
The bag can get hot so watch and
monitor carefully.
Balloon rockets

Blow up a balloon. Hold

tight to the end but do not
knot the end.
Attach a straw to the
balloon
Thread string, fishing line
or wool through the straw.
Hold tight to the string
from each end of the room.
Let go of the balloon –
what do you observe?
Paper planes

• Using scrap paper

build a paper airplane.
Create a landing strip
and see who’s plane
can fly the furthest.
• Extension – see if you
can make adjustments
to fly in circles or do a
loop-de-loop
Teacher notes – paper planes

Simple Dart
The Bulldog Dart – flat nosed
plane that flies differently to the
