ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
(HEED 218)
ACTIVITY 1

Prepared by:
JONALYN G. GASPAR

1. What is assessment of learning?

Assessment is the process of collecting, reviewing, and using strategies for improvement in the current
performance of the students. It provides feedback on performance and ways to enhance performance in
the future. In assessing learning, teachers must consider learners' learning styles and multiple
intelligences, and so they must come up with a variety of ways of assessing learning. Also, assessment is
an activity that teachers use to assess students through examinations, shorter quizzes, recitations, or
longer assignments like research papers or projects. Assessment of learning also refers to the
assessment-related tasks that come at the end of instruction for the purpose of measuring learners'
attainment. It also refers to the strategies designed to confirm what students know, demonstrate
whether or not they have met curriculum outcomes or the goals of their individualized programs, or to
certify proficiency and make decisions about students' future programs or placements.

2. Give 3 positive experiences you had that are related to assessment. Explain why each it is
considered a positive experience?

Assessment is a strategy used by teachers to assess students’ performance. A teacher should motivate
students to learn by using her teaching strategies so that students will love to learn and enjoy learning. I
have these experiences that make me feel that my teaching is effective and useful to help them in their
academic performance. First, I have students with high scores, students who passed the assessment in
housekeeping NC II, and students who got perfect scores in my subject from the first quarter to the
fourth quarter. I was so happy to witness their achievements, especially when they passed the
housekeeping NC II accredited by TESDA. These students are performing well in my class; they always
get high scores during quizzes and summative tests, as well as maintaining perfect scores in my periodic
exam every quarter. These students are not only academic achievers, but they are also dreamers who
tend to dream big and soar high. Being a teacher and their facilitator in learning was indeed one of my
most memorable experiences as a teacher. Looking at their faces with a smile when they've received the
assessment results that they were able to perform and pass the said assessment was indeed a great
impact for me as a teacher. And I'm looking forward to exploring more teaching experiences with more
learning to teach students to help them be successful.

3. Give 3 negative experiences you had that are related to assessment. Explain why each it is
considered a negative experience?
In assessing students’ performance, we are expecting a positive outcome based on their
assessment. In giving this assessment, it will help teachers identify the effectiveness of their
teaching methods and strategies. In my three years of teaching, I have experienced a lot of
difficulties in giving assessments to the students. And these three (3) experiences are: students
with low scores, students who cannot perform during the demonstration, and students who are
slow readers and lack interest. In some cases, I have students who are slow readers and lack
comprehension. Some of them find it difficult to read. They always got a low score from giving
them quizzes and summative tests; they cannot perform well with simple role play and
activities. And based on my evaluation, they failed in my subject. For me, it is a negative
experience knowing they are already at a higher level and are graduating students. At their
level, they should be a role model for the lower level; they should perform well and motivate
other students. Due to a lack of comprehension, students may experience self-doubt and self-
pity. They may experience bullying and judgment, not just inside the classroom but around the
people in their surroundings. As teachers, our first goal is to help students learn and apply this
knowledge and skill. Mentoring students' intellects by helping them develop problem-solving,
critical, and creative thinking skills. Helping them find and hone their voice by working on
developing communication skills and confidence in expressing themselves.

4. What is it that you know when it comes to assessment in learning?

For me, assessments play a crucial role in education, providing valuable insights into students’
knowledge, skills, and learning progress. Using assessments in learning, teachers can determine
whether the learning objectives of the course—what students should know or be able to do by
the end of a class have been met. Also, assessment will help students learn through the
assessment results, which will help them identify areas of strength and weakness so they can
do better. Using assessments in learning, teachers can readily gauge the effectiveness of their
teaching methods and instructions and make adjustments where necessary. That’s why, when
choosing the appropriate assessment type, a classroom teacher should consider the learning
goals, instructional context, and students’ needs. Provide an assessment tool that can easily
help students learn and acquire new knowledge and skills.

5. What are those things you are curious about assessment in learning? (Things you want to
learn more).
When it comes to assessment in learning, I am always curious about the different strategies of
teaching, especially for those students who are slow readers and lack of comprehension. They
cannot perform well, and they cannot express themselves. As of now, I want to learn and be
part of the NLC (National Learning Camp) program of DepEd to help students enhance their
reading comprehension and develop themselves. It will also enhance students' academic
achievement by addressing their individual needs and providing effective interventions. Overall,
it will help students overcome academic challenges and improve their educational outcomes.
As teachers, we need to be flexible so that we can impart moral lessons and values to their
minds and hearts. Their future lies in our hands as we continue to motivate and teach them to
achieve their goals in life.
