FIELD STUDY 1
FIELD STUDY 1 - Course Description and Course Learning Outcomes: This is the
first experiential course, which will immerse a future teacher into an actual classroom situation
and learning environment where direct observation of teaching-learning episodes that focus on
applying educational theories learned in content and pedagogy courses will be made.
Observations on learners' behavior, motivation, teacher's teaching strategies, classroom
management, and assessment in learning, among others, shall be emphasized.

B. Compare diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments by completing this Venn diagram.

Diagnostic Formative

To gather information about Formative assessments guide

students' prior knowledge,
ongoing instruction and
skills, strengths, and
weaknesses before provide feedback
instruction.

Summative assessments
measure overall achievement
and make decisions about
student progress.
Summative
C. Observe assessment strategies used by your cooperating teacher in class. List down five
assessment strategies and categorize the type of each assessment strategy.

Assessment Type of Assessment

1. Multiple Choice Test Summative Assessment
2. Observation Formative Assessment
3. Concept Test Formative/Summative Assessment
4. Interviews Formative/Summative Assessment
5. Interactive Group Activities Formative Assessment

D. Interview the cooperating teacher on how they use the results of diagnostic, formative, and
summative assessments.
1. Results of diagnostic assessments

I use diagnostic assessments to identify individual or collective areas of strength and

weakness in my students' knowledge and skills. This information helps me tailor their
instructional methods to address specific learning needs. With that, the results of diagnostic
assessments empower us teachers to make informed decisions about our instructional practices,
ensuring that we meet the diverse needs of our pupils and support effective learning.

2. Results of formative assessments

I use the results of the formative assessment to in order to inform my instruction

and enhance student learning. Through that result I can identify the learning gaps of my
pupils, provide immediate feedback ang guidance, modify my strategies to align with the
needs of the class, and monitor the progress of the kids. The results of formative
assessments play a crucial role in the ongoing teaching and learning process, providing valuable
insights that empower us teachers to make informed decisions and enhance the educational
experience for our pupils.

3. Results of summative assessments

Gathering the results of the summative assessments is very important in tracking

the learning progress of my pupils. With the result of this assessment, I can evaluate the
progress of my pupils, identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in my teaching methods or
the curriculum, provide feedback to my pupils base on their performance with the summative
assessment, become aware on areas where pupils consistently excel, allowing for targeted
instructional strategies in subsequent courses. The results play a significant role in shaping future
instruction, guiding student learning, and contributing to overall educational improvement.
Teachers leverage this information to make data-driven decisions that benefit both individual
students and the broader educational community.

Other comments and observations:

Based on my observations, I draw the conclusion that diagnostic, formative, and

summative assessments provide a strong foundation for comprehending and improving the
learning process. Diagnostic assessment customizes education from the outset, formative
assessment directs immediate instructional decisions and summative assessment offers a final
assessment. Together, these evaluations make sure that learning is an active and adaptable
process that promotes student and program success overall, individualized learning, and ongoing
development. Teachers who effectively apply the knowledge acquired from these evaluations
enable themselves to establish stimulating and productive learning environments that meet the
varied requirements of their pupils.
ANALYSIS

1. In your own opinion, which of the three assessment strategies is the most important? Explain
your answer.

All three of the tests, in my opinion, are crucial parts of a comprehensive and successful
evaluation system. The particular objectives and demands of the educational setting determine
which assessment technique is most crucial. Formative, diagnostic, and summative assessments
are all part of a well-rounded approach that guarantees a thorough grasp of student learning and
promotes ongoing enhancements to teaching and learning methodologies.

2. How does assessment improve the students' learning and the teachers' performance?

Assessment functions as a dynamic feedback loop that directs ongoing development for
teachers and students alike, encourages student participation, and informs instructional decisions.
It creates an environment for learning that is attentive, encouraging, and goal-oriented toward
accomplishing worthwhile learning objectives.

REFLECT

The primary purpose of assessment is not to measure but to further learning. Reflect on your
firsthand experiences of assessment in school. Were you given opportunities for self-assessment? If yes,
what was its impact on your learning?

My firsthand experiences when it comes to assessment is that it actually gives me the

courage to improve and enhance more my knowledge and my performance in school in terms of
academics. Because my engagement on my first experience towards assessment was not really
satisfying because the teacher as far as I can remember discovered that I was having trouble with
some subjects and to make the story short she encourages me to do better the next time and pay
more attentions to class. So, reflecting from that experience, assessment really is very effective in
measuring the progress of the students and the teacher can be able to guide and support the
learner throughout the process of the improvement of the child towards better learning. In terms
of self-assessment, yes, and the impact of that on my learning is very highly commendable since
through self-assessment I learn and improve much better.
