Okay, very good Kate.

As you’ve observed in the situation

when do primary and secondary
survey used?

Yes, Stefanie? You should use the primary survey

whenever you discover a casualty –
someone who is injured or has
fallen ill. This may be due to an
identifiable accident or incident,
such as a fall ma’am.

Great idea Stefanie.

Primary Survey- This is a quick and

systematic survey of the person to
find out if there are conditions or
injuries sustained as life threatening.
These are the things you should do
everybody read.

A. Check for consciousness

1. Ask the victim:” Hey, hey,
are you okay?” While
carefully shaking the victim’s
shoulder
2. When there is no response,
not even mumbles or groans,
the victim is unconscious and
in need of immediate
medical help.
B. Open the airway
1. The victim’s unconscious
maybe due to an obstruction
in his/her airway.
2. Find out if there is loss of

muscular control in the

throat area.
3. Lift the chin and tilt the head
of the victim
C. Check for breathing
Put your face near the victim’s
mouth then look, listen, and
feel from breathing. Observe
for:
 Chest movement
 Sound of breathing
 Feel of breath on your cheek
D. Check for Circulation
1. Locate pulse using your
middle and index finger
2. Poor blood circulation may
be reflected on pale skin.
This is fatal.
3. To revive circulation,
perform CPR immediately.

Thank you, so we also have the

responsive casualty and those

the casualty's history, signs, and
symptoms ma’am.

Good idea Liam.

Secondary Survey is used when the
victim is conscious or has revived.

We have also process on how to use

the secondary survey.
Everybody read. History Taking
S – ymptoms (the chief complaint
of the patient)
A – llergy (find out if the victim is
allergic to anything)
M – edication (what are the
medicines s/he is currently taking)
P – revious illness (that may be
related to the problem)
L – ast meal (only for those subject
for operation)
E – vents prior to what happened
P – eriod of pain (How long? What
started it?)
A – rea (Where is the pain coming
from?)
I – ntensity
N – ullify (What stopped it?)

Thank you, SAMPLE PAIN is the

mnemonic to perform the steps
more easily.
Can you follow? Yes ma’am

Okay next step. Everybody read. A.

Checking for vital signs
1. Pulse rate – tells you the heart rate
or the number of times the
heartbeat per minute.
The pulse rate may be taken in
different points in the body like:
 Brachial
 Subclavian
 Carotid
 Axillary
 Wrist
 Femoral
 Temporal

1. What should not do when getting

pulse? Kindly read Allen?
Never use your thumb: it has its
own pulse
 Do not palpate both the
carotid arteries at the same time
 Do not take the pulse
when the victim is in sitting
position. Pulsations disappear as
the victim is elevated to a sitting
position
 Never put too much
Thank you, Allen. pressure or massage the carotid.
You may disturb the heart’s

Everybody continues reading.

Temperature
1. Body temperature is measured
by using a thermometer within the:
Rectum (rectal), Oral (mouth),
Axillary (armpit)

2. Respiration it is important to
know whether the victim is
still breathing normally,
breathing too fast, or too
slow. The normal rate for an
adult person range from 12
to 16 breathes per minute.

3. Blood Pressure – is a life-

threatening condition. To
check the pressure of blood,
you need an instrument like
the stethoscope. Normal
blood pressure reading
should be more than 120/80
and less than 140/90.
Normal pulse rate
60-70 Men
4. Skin color
70-80 Women A healthy skin is warm and pink
80-90 Children over 7 because blood flows
years old normally in the blood vessels
80-120 Children over 1-7
years old 5. Head to toe Examination
110-130 Infants  Head and neck
 Chest
 eyes
 abdomen
 back
Check for bleeding, bruises,
fracture, dislocation, lumps,
movement, etc.

should know in secondary survey.

Anyone, who want to share? As far as I’ve watched the video, I

Yes, Yla? observed that the proper
procedure in administering the
CAB ma’am is:
C- compressions push hard and fast
on the center of the victim’s chest.
A – airway tilt the victim’s head
back and lift the chin to open the
airway
B – breathing give mouth to mouth
Very good. Yla, you watched rescue beaths
properly the video

E. Finding practical It is time to experience on how to

concepts and skills group performance. You are given 3
in daily living minutes to practice after which you

abstractions about
the lesson Okay, we’ve done with the
[ELABORATE] application of primary and secondary
survey. When to be used again the
primary survey?

Yes, Sonia? We should use the primary survey

whenever we discover a casualty –
someone who is injured or has
fallen ill. This may be due to an
identifiable accident or incident,
such as a fall ma’am.
Okay very good. How about
secondary?

Yes, Ezreel?
Once we have completed a primary
survey and treated any life-
threatening conditions, move on to
a secondary survey. Ask a
responsive casualty and those
around them questions about any
incident that may have occurred.
Your aim is to find out more about
the casualty's history, signs, and
symptoms ma’am.
Very good. Okay we are now done
with this lesson. I hope you learned
something on how to save life in
case of emergency.
