Written Assignment Unit 7

In this written assignment requirement, I feel the challenging behaviors

undertaken by adolescents during Rumspringa which is a period in an Amish person's life

when they are allowed to go out and experience the world before taking their vows,

getting married and joining the church. It means during the period known as Rumspringa,

beginning at about age 16, Amish youth are no longer under the total control of their

parents on weekends and, because they are not baptized, they are not yet under the

authority of the church. During this period, they are free to choose and hold their

responsible for the consequences of their decision.

However, Amish parents do not encourage their youth to leave home and

experiment with sinful behaviors nor do they condone it. At the same time, there must be

at least a semblance of free choice in the decision to become Amish. Amish parents may

disapprove of their teens’ behaviors, but do not necessarily exercise authority to prevent

some of those behaviors. Disagreements over beliefs, practices, and church doctrines

slowly fractured the community into different affiliations (Hurst & McConnell, 2010).

Educational implications for moral decisions by their families and communities,

for social conventions are uniformities within social systems, serving to provide uniform

expectations. Individuals do reason about social relationships in different ways,

accounting for societal customs and conventions as well as arenas of personal jurisdiction

and choice. A significant aspect of orientations to social relationships is reasoning about

the welfare and rights of people, as well as concerns with justice. Therefore, it is

important to understand how individuals weigh and balance different considerations in

coming to decisions in social contexts (Turiel & Banas, 2020).
