Lesson
Delivering Impromptu Speaking
1

Speaking is one of the macro skills in English that we should develop.

As a student, your ability to speak and answer the questions of your teacher
helps you to gain knowledge and confidence that will be an asset to make and
deliver your own impromptu speech.

What’s In

Our manner of speaking has the ability to mold the symbols into
meaning. Your initial task is just a sort of review of the skill you have

6
acquired from your previous lesson.
How will you say “I’m a millionaire” when you are:
1. Happy
2. Sad
3. Surprise
4. Gloomy
5. Sorrowful
6. Proud

Were you able to apply the different language features as you do the
task? If so, this will help you express your ideas when presenting a speech.

What’s New

Here’s a video from ABS-CBN’s Tonight with Boy Abunda featuring

Karina Bautista who takes on Boy Abunda’s challenge to her. After watching
the video, answer the questions that follow.

http//bit.ly/TonightWithBoyAbunda-TFCTV

Let’s answer these questions:

1. What is the video about?
2. What kinds of speech are mentioned in the video?
3. What is the difference between the two kinds of speech mentioned?
4. After watching, how did the character respond to the challenge of the
interviewer? Do you think you can also make your own speech?

7
What Is It

The video you watched gave you a glimpse of one of the widely used kinds of
speech- the impromptu speech.

What is Impromptu Speaking?

Impromptu Speaking is done when you talk on the spot with no

prepared draft, outline, or note cards. This method is applied only to
brief reports that require little or no research or presentation.
Impromptu speaking can be done in a form of a story, a song sung, or
a poem recited.

Steps in Planning and Drafting your Speech

1. Clarify your position. How do you feel about the issue and why?
2. Find support for your position. What research will you have to do
to back up your case? Where can you find that information? Which
evidence will help you make your point most effectively?
3. Identify your audience. What do your listeners already know about
the issue? What is their stand on it?
4. Consider how to captivate your listeners’ attention. What
startling statistics, amusing anecdote, or intriguing question can
you use to hook your audience at the beginning of your speech?
5. Decide how to present your arguments. How can you organize
your arguments so they have the greatest impact? Do you want to
begin with the argument your audience will probably agree with and
move to more controversial points? Would starting with your
strongest argument— or ending with it— work better?

Remember that a speech has an introduction that introduces the

problem and gives the background information needed and the thesis
statement, a body that contains the reasons and a conclusion that gives
one or two general statements.

8
This is Good to Know
Cohesion is very important aspect of academic writing because it
immediately affects the tone of your writing. Although some instructions
may say that you will lose points if the tone of your writing is too casual or
sloppy 9a diary- type of writing of choppy sentences will make the tone of
your writing too casual for academic writing).

Cohesive writing refers to the connection of your ideas both at the sentence
level and the paragraph level.

Coherence is another important aspect of academic writing. Literally, the

word means “to stick together”. Coherence in writing means that all ideas
in a paragraph flow smoothly from one sentence to the next sentence. With
coherence, the reader has an easy time understanding the ideas that you
wish to express.

To be able to write/ make effective speeches, the logical links between

various ideas and points made must be clear to the audience.

Rising from your seat and speak can be a challenge you can deal with
given the knowledge on how to organize your ideas.

Here are some tips you can use the next time you are called to make an
Impromptu Speech.
1. Decide quickly what your one message will be.
2. Do not try to memorize what you will say.
3. Start off strong and with confidence.
4. Decide on your transitions from one point to the other.
5. Maintain eye contact with the audience.
6. Occasionally throw in an off-the-cuff remark.
7. Finally, have a good conclusion.

With only little time consideration, you may remember to use the PREP
Strategy:

9
• State your POINT
• Give REASONS
• Cite EXAMPLES
• Go back to the POINT

Aside from organizing ideas, there are non- verbal behaviors that you
should know and you can use to enhance your communication skills.

Non- Verbal Behaviors

Communicating is more than just words. The manner in which we use

voice, facial expressions and body language affects the message we are
trying to give.

1. Use of Voice- The use of intonation and pauses that convey meaning
and attitude.
2. Volume- Volume depends on the needs of the situation, purpose and
audience. There are times when loud voices are required such as in a
play, or during assembly. There are also times when quiet voices are
necessary such as working in the library. Generally, speaking a voice
should be loud enough that the intended audience can hear and
understand the message being delivered. The use of varying volume will
help to create emphasis or drama when recounting events, telling a
story or persuading an audience.
3. Intonation- Intonation indicates the changes in speech; a downward
intonation indicates that a message is complete, while an upward
intonation indicates a question.
4. Juncture- Juncture is the manner in which words come together and
a connection is made.
5. Stress- Stress is an accent, the relative prominence of a syllable or
musical note.
6. Pitch- Pitch is useful to use when expressing emotion. Our pitch rises
when we are excited and lowers when we are sad.
7. Pauses- Pauses are moments of silence between phrases, used to
separate ideas, and also used for holding attention. This is particularly
useful when giving formal presentations such as an oral report or telling
a story.
8. Pronunciation- Pronunciation refers to the way words are said. Some
younger pupils may have difficulty in pronouncing the sounds in some
words and will benefit from hearing those words modeled in meaningful

10
contexts. Pronunciation varies across regions. It is important that
pupils know the accepted pronunciation of words in Standard English.
9. Proximity- Proximity is the amount of personal space between people
who are talking. The relationship between them, their personalities, and
their culture or whether the situation is personal, social, or public will
all affect the amount of proximity needed.
10. Eye Contact- Eye Contact is the use of the eyes or gaze in face
to face communication. The level of eye contact often depends on the
relationship between the communicators and affects both the speaker
and the listener.

You are now ready to apply what you have learned. Let go of your
worries about speeches and brace yourself with the new speaking
challenges.

Task 1: Info-mercial
Think and pick one essential product you see at home. Create a one-
minute commercial telling what makes it special, how essential it is, and why
everyone should have it at their homes.

Self-check!

Did you enjoy doing your commercial? It’s time to rate your performance.
Below are the stars which correspond to a scale of 1 to 5. Color the number
of stars which you feel reflect the level of your presentation with 5 colored
stars as the highest and 1 colored star as the lowest.

Task 2: “My Paper Bag Speech”

In this task, we will see how well you can combine creativity and
speaking skills. Follow the steps diligently.
1. Find a paper bag. It can be a grocery bag, gift bag or lunch bag and
decorate each side of the bag, however you wish with the following
contents:
a. SIDE 1- label with your likes and dislikes
b. SIDE 2- label with words that describe you

11
c. SIDE 3- person who inspires you
d. SIDE 4- what you value in life
2. Inside the bag, put things/objects that symbolize your personal goals,
hopes or dreams in life.
3. Speech Time!
Prepare a recorder or a mobile phone to record yourself while doing the
task for a self-evaluation
a. Start with an introduction of yourself
b. Share two sides from the outside of your paper bag
c. Pull one item you put inside the bag and share what it is and how it
represents your goal or dream.
d. Conclude with a statement about your goal or dream.
4. Submit your paper bag to your teacher

Evaluate your recorded speech by checking your appropriate response to the

statements.

OBSERVATION YES NO
I showed confidence with my presentation.
I conveyed my ideas well.
I gave an interesting introduction.
I gave a catchy ending.
I had a good pronunciation and maintained a well-
modulated voice.

Task 3: Where did the name come from?

Pick an item inside your room, a pencil for example. Tell a story about
how it got its name without time preparation. The goal here is to allow you
to develop interesting ideas from anything more than being accurate. Write
down your speech.

What’s More

What I Can Do

Task 8: Voice it Out!

The “new normal” phrase has been keyed in the language of different
people due to the pandemic COVID-19.
For this activity, give everything you want to say about the issue for 30
seconds. You can have your mobile phone ready to record yourself and listen
to it for self- evaluation. You are suggested to use the PREP Strategy as your
guide.
After recording your speech, it’s time to listen to your audio and
evaluate how well you state your point.
The only question you can ask yourself is:

“Was I successful in following the PREP Strategy?”

Task 9: What Does It Say?

Provided below is the latest data on the Covid-19 cases in the
Philippines. Give your reactions on the given information and the reasons why
you say so. Write down your reactions and your reasons.

Community Quarantine (GCQ) and Modified Enhanced Community
Quarantine (MECQ) towards the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of what went
well and how it could be improved even better if…

TASK 12: Flash Factor

For a lot of people, the prospect of standing in front of a group or

audience and speaking is terrifying. That’s a pretty serious phobia to
overcome if you are given the task to deliver a speech, what are you going to
do?
There are occasions when you may be called upon to speak at a public gathering or
social event, and being prepared will require you to plan and organize the text for
your speech. Here are some tips to help you plan and write a great speech.

16
Organize Your Speech
Good speech organization is essential if your audience is to understand
your presentation. You must take time to put your ideas together in an
orderly manner. You can organize your speech in several different ways;
choose the outline that best suits your topic. The opening should catch the
audience’s attention, the body must support the idea you want to convey,
and the conclusion should reinforce your ideas and be memorable.
Transitions between thoughts should be smooth.

Get to the Point

Every speech must have a general and a specific purpose. A general
purpose is to inform, to persuade, to entertain and to inspire. A specific
purpose is what you want the audience to do after listening to your speech.
Once you have established your general and specific purposes, you’ll find
it easy to organize your speech. You’ll also have more confidence, which
makes you more convincing, enthusiastic, and sincere. Of course, the
better organized the speech is, the more likely it to achieve your purpose.

Persuade with Power

The ability to persuade- to get other people to understand, accept, and act
upon your ideas – is a valuable skill. Your listeners will be more likely to
be persuaded if they perceive you as credible, if you use logic and emotion
in your appeal, if you carefully structure your speech, and if you appeal to
their interests. Avoid using notes because they may cause listeners to
doubt your sincerity, knowledge, and conviction.

Bearing in mind these tips, you can now deliver your impromptu
speech.
Directions: Choose one topic below and deliver a two-minute
impromptu speech about it. Record your speech for evaluation based on the
criteria given below.

“new normal” “Millennial” Social media pandemic

Note to the Teacher

This week’s module aims to help the students develop their ability in public
speaking, especially in impromptu speaking. Thus, much of its tasks require the
students to present speeches. To cope with the “new normal” situation, there are
activities which ask the students to record their audios/presentations. You may
ask your students to compile their recorded presentations in one file for the
evaluation purposes and tracking of progress.
