Crack the Case

1. What are the issues in this case?

The issues with this case is the teachers not understanding that not only do their students have
differing learning styles but their personality traits also have an impact on their learning. You
have to consider what may be going on in the adolescent mind and how they are struggling to
adjust.

2. To what extent should teachers adapt their instruction to their strengths, learning styles, and
personalities of their students? Why?

Students have a varying level of abilities, learning styles, and personalities and it is important as
an educator to realize this and try and meet the needs of all your students. Through
differentiated instructional strategies, teachers can meet these varying needs of their students
and help them to exceed. With differentiated instruction, teachers proactively modify the
curriculum, teaching methods, resources, and learning activities to address the needs of
individual students and small groups of students to maximize the learning opportunity for all.

3. What will you do in your classroom to accommodate individual differences such as students’
strengths, learning styles, and personalities?

There are several ways be able to help give a student what they need to succeed. As a teacher
you can provide access to reading materials that are at varying levels. This way the students can
learn the same information, but can read at their level. Being able to present the material and
content to students not only audibly but visibly. It is important to be able to offer students
hands on experiences for those who learn best by touching and feeling.

Some practical ways to incorporate differentiational learning are

 Teach with diverse materials
 Organize instructions to meet all reading levels
 Encourage discussion
 Write to explore, think, learn, and improve comprehension
 Use ongoing assessments to support each student
 Plan units carefully

4. What other individual differences do you think you might have to accommodate? How will you
do this?

Other differences that as an educator you might have to accommodate would by possibly
cultural. Children in various cultures learn different rules for communicating with adults through
facial expressions, body language, and physical gestures. It may be difficult to understand
nonverbal messages because different cultures have different expectations about eye contact,
physical touch, body gestures, etc. To crate a positive environment for communication, your
nonverbal message needs to closely match your verbal message.
