PRINT DURABILITY
PURPOSE
To assess the durability of applied components (eg. Pigment, latex & spandex prints) to washing.
If carried out in garment form 2 identical garments are required for testing.
APPARATUS
TEST METHOD
1) Prepare two samples 300 x 300mm ensuring each design/colourway is included. Use one sample for
testing and one for original comparison. If the fabric is knitted double this measurement.
2) Overlock around all edges of the fabric that is to be tested. If the sample is knitted sew the sample into
the form of a bag.
3) Fill the twin tub to the full mark .
4) Heat the water to the specified temperature. Check the temperature using a calibrated thermometer.
5) Dissolve 160g of reference ECE detergent and 40g of sodium perborate and add to the water in the twin
tub.
6) Run the machine for approximately 2 minutes to ensure all detergent is dissolved.
7) Weigh the test sample. Using polyester ballast make the weight up to 1kg.
8) Add the test specimen and polyester ballast to the twin tub and run for 15 minutes.
9) After the cycle is complete, remove the sample from the machine, rinse once in warm water and once in
cold water to ensure total removal of detergent.
10) Spin sample to remove excess water.
11) Flat dry the sample at room temperature.
12) Assess any change in shade and cross staining against the original sample using grey scales under
D65 artificial daylight. Also comment on any change in appearance.

FIBRE PERCOLATION
PURPOSE
To assess the fibre migration/percolation of wadding through an outer fabric during wear. This method is
applicable for quilted fabrics, but is not applicable for fabrics where locallised embroidery/appliqué is
present, or for fabrics with excessive OBA present or for wadded products that are greater than 30mm
thick.
APPARATUS
CONDITIONING
The test specimens are to be conditioned in the standard atmosphere of 65% Relative
Humidity (RH) +/- 2% and 20°C +/- 2°C for a minimum of 4 hours. All tests should also be carried out in this
atmosphere.
The use of an ultraviolet lamp poses a risk which can be minimised as follows, when assessing this test a
person shall not perform grading for periods longer 30 minutes and shall take at least 30 minutes break
between grading.
1) Prepare 4 samples in the length direction and 4 in the width direction. Each composite specimens are to
be120mm x 300mm.
2) The composite should be sewn through all thicknesses along all 4 sides of the specimen using an
overlocking machine.
3) If the specimens are to be cleansed prepare the same number of samples as described above. The
samples are cleansed in accordance with the care label instructions.
4) Measure the thickness of each test specimen using a thickness gauge to the nearest 0.5mm.
TEST PROCEDURE
1) Adjust separation of clamp “A” and “B” by moving Clamp “B” to a separation of:
Thickness (mm) x 1.7 = Distance in mms 100
2) Place one end under clamp “A” and folding the sample in half downwards, place the other end in clamp
“B”, tightening the wing nuts to ensure clamp ‘A’ and clamp ‘B’ are securely sealed.
3) For each direction two samples should be tested face to face and two samples back to back.
