EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON OUR LIVES: IS SOCIAL MEDIA

NEGATIVELY AFFECTING OUR WAY OF LIFE?

Written by Madalitso Mbewe Jr

Miriam Webster dictionary defines social media as “forms of electronic communication such
as websites for social networking and micro blogging through which users create online
communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content such as
videos”. From this definition we see the many advantages that social media platforms like
Facebook, whatsapp, and linked just to mention a few offer. Social media has made
communication easier, cheaper and more fun. A study on Facebook done by Deloitte states
that “Facebook connects 1.5 Billion People with their friends and families around the world
and helps them discover new products and services from the local and global community “.
(Deloitte, 2015 ). How true, today at the touch of a button, family and friends can share
memories; companies can sell products without the challenges faced using traditional
methods of communication. Social media platforms like Facebook have introduced
interactive ways of communicating with their clients through Facebook. Deloitte continues to
state that in 2014 Facebook alone enabled $277 billion economic impact on the world and
created over 4.5 million jobs globally. (Deloitte, 2015 ). These jobs range from social media
managers, marketers and many many more. Social media has made it easy for companies and
organizations to recruit and for individuals to find work. Platforms like LinkedIn has
promoted networking between companies and individuals. It helps individuals to post their
curriculum vitae, displaying their professional experience and abilities.

Although, social media continues to grow in popularity, there are those who believe that
social media is a menace in the society and continues to negatively affect our way of life.
Truly since the coming in of social media, the world has registered a rise in cyber-crime
activities. Studies have proven that social media pages like Facebook, whatsapp and twitter
have been used to promote hate speeches, identity theft, cyber bullying and invasion of
privacy. Most cyber criminals target your personal information in order to get money .
(McDonough, B.R. (2019). Spreading of propaganda and hate speech to destabilize a
country is another area. For example here in Malawi, social media has been used by political
parties to incite post elections violence in our just ended general elections and a lot of
property was burnt down and people died. Besides the increase in cyber-crime, Facebook and
other social media platforms have contributed to health and personality disorders in people.
According to a study by success magazine, “social media can exacerbate feelings of
disconnect and put children at higher risk for anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, eating
disorders and even suicide”. Hatcher, .p (2017) Another study done by psychologist Paul A.
Kirschnera from the Open University of the Netherlands confirms that “college students who
are on Facebook while studying or doing homework wind up getting 20 percent lower grades
than students who don't have the social networking site in visual range, or even running in the
background on their computers or mobile phones” Kirschnera, .P(2010) . But although the
study by Deloitte on Facebook has created over 4.5 Million jobs, excessive use of social
media by business organizations has also created loss of jobs. The use of social media in
marketing and sales has forced many organizations to scale down on the traditional methods
of sales and marketing thereby laying off a lot of people from work. An example would be
many television and radio stations have closed down because they have lost advertisers who
now prefer the more affordable and more interactive advertising offered by social media
platforms.

Although many individuals and organizations continue to suffer from the negative effects of
social media, Experts are coming up with ways to manage and control these negative effects.
Many individuals are learning to create a balance between the use of social media and
traditional methods of doing things. For example companies are being encouraged to bring in
a balance between online marketing and traditional marketing methods. Individuals are being
encouraged to take a break from social media to avoid addictions. For example, Clinical
psychologist Dr. Lucie Hemmen writes that, “Most people experience huge benefits from
taking a social media break. Hemmen, L. ( 2015). To protect themselves from cyber-crime,
individuals are employing security measures like firewalls, Anti-Viruses and many others.
(Gobler , J. , Eloff , J., & Walt, E.(2018).
Is social media a menace to the society then? Not at all. The positives of social media
outweigh the negatives. A lot of individuals and business organizations continue to benefit
from the so many advantages that social media has to offer. From creation of Jobs to ease of
communication, social media platforms are doing much good than bad. Yes the negative
results of too much dependence on social can be disastrous if not managed, but the world is
slowly learning to manage the ills of social media so that it does not negatively affect the way
we live.
