The AC31 provides you with a distinct progress
not only for the hardware but for the programming
software as well.

The simplicity of a homogenous RS232


range...
All 40, 50 or 90 series central units are compatible
as they use common languages and programming
tools.
The other components, remote units, couplers and
displays, also have the same compatibility.

...progressing from a compact


machine with 14 inputs/outputs
A single central unit is sufficient to pilot a few sen- RS232
sors/actuators. The basic 07CR41 version disposes
of 8 inputs and 6 relay outputs (transistor outputs for
the 07CT41).
It can process analog values: pressure sensors,
temperature, proportional valve actuator, etc… In
order to do this one to six additional analog exten-
sion units are required.

...to 110 inputs/outputs or more


Each central unit, of the 40 or 50 series, directly
supports up to 6 extensions (photo 1) without further
cabling.
This makes 110 binary inputs/outputs or 14 binary
I/O and 36 analog I/O. The 50 and 90 series enable
the processing of up to 1000 I/O.

A rapid cycle
The processing power of the 40, 50 or 90 series
central units is well adapted to all applications. The
typical cycle time varies, depending on the configu-
rations, from 1 ms to 8 ms. This time can be further
improved by using a rapid cyclic task.

Up to 1000 I/O and large numbers


of analog data
The central units of the 90 series push the limits
of the AC31 even further and are fully compatible
with the other system components.
They particularly excel when the application calls
numerous complex procedures.

For extensive installations…


A distributed automation solution becomes a
technical and financial requirement once the
twisted pair
machine or installation surface exceeds a few
square meters.
The strength of the AC31 system lies in the
interconnection of central units and remote units,
linked to sensors and actuators, with twisted pair
cables.
There is practically no limit to the extent of such a
system as it can be extended for up to 2 kilometers.

…open to the industrial world


Apart from standard actuators, the AC31 system
can control robots as well as a number of ABB
variable speed drives. (photos 2 and 3)
The AC31 can be used in all applications requiring
communications with external systems.
It incorporates couplers which support, amongst
others, Modbus®, RCOM, PDnet, Arcnet®, AF100
and Profibus DP® protocols.

Rapidity and ease


The Modbus® protocol, incorporated in the 40, 50
and 90 series central units, enables transfer rates of
up to 250 ms for 100 analog data at 19 200 bits/s.

to cost effectiveness
This generation was designed based on the opinions
of automation users and takes into account their
high requirements: accessibility, easy installation,
safety, reduced operating costs, standardization.

Conceived with flexibility in mind


The complete modularity of the system makes it
easy to understand. All the elements are compatible.
The distributed intelligence of the AC31 enables
tasks to be modular and thereby accelerates
applications development.
Finally, its field of application is practically unlimited:
the AC31 “ignores distances” and can function at
up to 2 kilometers (with NCB repeaters).

Programming ease
The new programming tools are definitely user
oriented and run on a PC platform under Microsoft®
Windows®.
These programm adhere to the IEC 1131-3
standards.
A choice of languages is available: Ladder Diagram,
Function Block Diagram,
Instruction List, Sequential
Function Chart.
Near to perfect compatibility is
thereby maintained with market
standards offering complete
evolutive liberty.

Installation savings

The user-friendly advantage


Down times are restricted due to:
● a complete natural language diagnostic on the PC
● LED error display on the units: short circuit,
actuator overloads, cut wire of an analog channel
On analog extension units the operator can read the
unit’s error messages as well as actual numeric
values (scaled) on the incorporated display.

Maintenance and planed evolution


Diagnostics (read all information) or control (forcing
variables, loading new programs) can be carried out
remotely when the AC31 is fitted with a normal
modem. Of course these functions are password
protected.
Changing a unit is very easy: unclip from the DIN rail
and pull out.
