Text materials are selected from a variety of resources including textbooks, online resources, standard
tests and self-created materials. All supplementary materials will be shared on my website:
http://msyixingchen.weebly.com/ under Mandarin 1.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
1 notebook, 1 folder, pencil or legible pen (blue or black only).
Bringing above materials to class each day is a requirement. Your notes will be evaluated at the end
of each Quarter. When done properly the notebook serves as a useful tool in high stakes testing at the
end of the year and in subsequent school years.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In Mandarin 1, students will learn to communicate in a range of everyday situations. Students will
engage in communicative tasks in oral, visual, reading and written forms. Students will also have
opportunities to compare and contrast their own culture and the target culture. The course is designed to
equip students with the basic language skills as well as develop cultural understanding. Students will
learn through authentic materials, real-life tasks and independent projects.

GRADING:
The learning competencies listed in the Course Objectives will be observed and measured through
completion of daily assignments, oral and written class interactions, quizzes, chapter tests, projects, and
oral and written exams. Grades for each quarter are based on the following:
