Photo Recap: 5th Annual Taste of DC - Day 1

Sub-Radio Standard performs on the Main Stage

Downtown Washington was the place to be yesterday, as it played host to both the Million Man March and the fifth annual Taste of DC. That meant huge crowds along Pennsylvania Avenue (literally thousands upon thousands of people) and enough tasty treats to feed each and every one of 'em. General Admission to the latter cost $20, and included a complimentary beverage + a free bowl at ShopHouse, good through the end of November. Mother Nature did her part (perfect weather) and DC's premiere food festival took care of the rest. Just in case you missed it, it starts all over again tomorrow (from 12-7 PM.) Click here to purchase tickets.

From our friends at PETA...

Delicious Meat-Free Meals Are Easy to Come By at DC Stadium

As baseball fever sweeps the nation, there's good news for animal-friendly Nationals fans: PETA's newest list of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks of 2015 has rocketed Nationals Park to the number three spot - up two from last year. Fans and visitors alike rave about the vegetarian chicken sandwich - faux chicken and a mix of grilled vegetables served on a hoagie roll - and the Vegetarian Cheesesteak (both can be made vegan if you hold the cheese.) Favorites at the suites include the vegan summer bean salad - green and waxed beans, asparagus, snow peas, and shredded carrots tossed in a vinaigrette - and the roasted cauliflower, served with mixed herbs, breadcrumbs, and salsa verde.

NatsFest Photo Recap

Tyler Clippard (center) "hams it up" during NatsFest Feud

Rock the Red

After the fact, the big takeaway from yesterday's NatsFest was who wasn't there (Bryce Harper) but so far as I could tell, it didn't matter much to the thousands of folks "rockin' the red" at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. I've covered my fair share events at the Convention Center (including Awesome Con) but I've yet to find a more passionate group of fans in one place. What's next? A World Series?

Photo Recap: Taste of DC - Day 1

George kicks up his heels at the 4th annual Taste of DC

Mother Nature tried her best; but even she couldn't dampen the mood at the fourth annual Taste of DC along Pennsylvania Avenue earlier today. Day one was a huge hit, with hundreds (seemingly thousands) waiting in line to try delicious tastes from 70 local restaurants and food trucks (we managed to hit four ourselves, with more on the horizon tomorrow.) Live music (on two stages) and Ben's Chili Bowl World Chili Eating Championship (won by competitive eater extraordinaire Joey Chestnut) only added to the fun. Taste of DC continues tomorrow at noon (through 7:00 PM) with clear skies in the forecast.

Bryce Harper Appears at Washington Auto Show

Bryce Harper at Toyota Live

Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper was on hand to headline Day Two of the 2014 Washington Auto Show tonight, participating in a Toyota Live-sponsored interview with two of WJFK's Sports Junkies. Harper's a joy to watch; but even he struggled to overcome the listless Junkies, whose questions bordered on "criminally boring." After 90 minutes (poor Bryce, poor us) Harper posed for pictures with fans.

Box Frites Food Review

Baseball is baseball; but concessions are a whole other ballgame. One of my favorite things to do at Nationals Park is stroll up to the Mezzanine Level and visit Box Frites for my latest potato fix. Smart packaging and superb service (thank you Tysheana!) keep me coming back for more, despite a hefty price tag ($7.75 for a large box) and relatively ordinary fries.

Take That Philly: Nationals Crush Phillies 9-2

Ian Desmond slams a 3rd inning double to deep center

They may appear done on the playoff front; but the Washington Nationals played in post-season form last night, blasting the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2 in front of 27,831 at Nats Park. Starting pitcher Dan Haren (7-11) continued his remarkable comeback, allowing just four hits and two runs over seven innings. He also racked up seven strikeouts, while winning his first start against Philadelphia in eight career tries.

Headphone Giveaway Planned for Nats-Braves September 18th

The Washington Nationals may be fading fast in their quest to return to the post-season (Fat chance... they're not going) but there's still reason to head over to Nats Park... at least on September 18th. That's when T-Mobile will give away 20,000 of the above pictured (cool as a cucumber) headphones to Nats fans who arrive early enough: Trust me, bobbleheads fly out of the park; so imagine how fast these things will travel.
