Parkway Theatre (Photo: Amy Davis) |
From our friends at the National Building Museum...
New Exhibition Incorporates Work of Photographer Amy Davis to Document Baltimore’s Movie Theaters from 1896 to the Present
On November 17, the National Building Museum opens Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters. Since the arrival of its first nickelodeon, the Maryland city has been home to more than 240 movie theaters. Today, many of these buildings survive but only a handful still function as theaters. This new exhibition uses photography, architectural fragments, theater ephemera, and personal stories to explore national trends in theater design and movie-going, illuminating themes of memory, loss, and preservation. Flickering Treasures is open through October 14, 2019.

Awesome Con 2017 Photo Recap - Day 2
Imagination Overdrive Balloon Animals |
Awesome Con has come a long way in five years. Early on, it was guest-heavy (i.e. William Shatner, Kevin Smith & Adam West) with a dash of cosplay. This year? A few big names (ahem... Stan Lee!) but the number of guests in costume? Literally, out of this world! Navigating the aisles has gotten more difficult as well... par for the course with record-setting crowds; but the end result is an exciting/unmatched atmosphere that might just be the most exciting event of the year at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Missed the first two days? Don't despair. Awesome Con continues tomorrow with a full schedule (10 AM - 5 PM) followed by a (sold-out, sorry) After-party at the Hard Rock Cafe. Click here to purchase tickets.

Whisky Live DC 2017 Photo Recap
City Jazz Co. at Whisky Live DC |
March is fast becoming Whisky month in the nation's capitol. Last week, it was the second annual WhiskyFest, this week, the third annual Whisky Live DC; and next week, St. Patrick's Day... Need I say more? We love the location (Grand Hyatt Washington) and master classes ($25 each, but worth every penny) but what makes WhiskyFest so special, is its intimacy, and how easy it is to navigate once inside. You never have to wait long for a sample, and there are two buffet tables with all sorts of goodies to keep you busy/sober in between sips, including Four Roses BBQ Breast of Chicken, Golden & Sweet Potato Hash and (my personal favorite) 72-hour Prime Rib Beef Short Ribs with Four Roses Caramelized Leek Glaze.

WhiskyFest 2017 Photo Recap
Most Popular... The Macallan |
Nobody likes going to school (OK, maybe kindergarten) but last night's second annual WhiskyFest provided lucky Washingtonians with the kind of education we can all get behind... 300+ whiskies from all over the world (including Japan!) It was held at the luxurious Marriott Marquis on Massachusetts Avenue, NW, and featured multiple food buffets (Beef Tenderloin Latkes, I love you) free seminars and easy access to unlimited pours of top notch whiskey. Especially good? Our #1 taste of the night, Calumet Farm Bourbon Whiskey; but truth be told, it's impossible to try them all, even if you're lucky enough to have early access, via a VIP ticket. Still, no matter how long you stay (an hour and a half for yours truly) you're destined to have a whiskey-rific good time. We're already counting down to next year (April 17, 2018, if you're curious.)

The 11th annual edition continues its (unofficial) reign as the nation's capital's most exciting and unique sports event: Take that Caps, Nats, Redskins and Wizards! Flower Mart 2016 - Day 2 Photo Recap
Fairfax Chinese Dance Troupe |
It rained cats and dogs yesterday... normally great news for flowers, unless you're trying to buy some. Day two of the 77th annual Washington National Cathedral Flower Mart was decidedly better/brighter, paving the way for a massive day-long turnout to celebrate the Centennial of the All Hallows Guild. And what better way to celebrate than carnival games, delicious food and great music. Here's a peak at some of our favorite moments.

To put the aforementioned "scope" into perspective... that's 3,600 matches in just three days. Sold yet? Of course, you are. DC Shot of the Day: Sir William Blackstone
Sir William Blackstone |
Nobody wants to go to court; but if you happen to be around the National Mall, we encourage you to swing by the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse on Constitution Avenue, NW (across the street from the National Gallery of Art East Building. There (standing guard) is Sir William Blackstone, a bronze statue of 18th century British judge William Blackstone. The 9' tall statue was created by sculptor Paul Wayland Bartlett almost 100 years ago (1920) and installed on August 11, 1943.
