Resumen La Mapoteca Virtual de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica es una actividad permanente de extensión que busca promover el uso de las TIC (Tecnologías de la información y la comunicación), así como de las TIG (Tecnologías de la información geográfica) en Costa Rica. Sus funciones están concentradas en un sitio web que se exhibe a través de la ideología del Open Access (Acceso Abierto), el cual cuenta con una serie de productos de cartografía temática, manuales sobre cartografía, recursos electrónicos y publicaciones relacionadas a las Ciencias Geográficas y otras afines. Abstract The Virtual Map Library of the National University of Costa Rica it's a permanent connection activity that looks to promote the use of ICT (Information and communications technology) and GIT (Geographic information technology) in Costa Rica. Its functions are concentrated in a website that's exhibits through an Open Access ideology a series of products of thematic cartography, manuals about cartography, electronic resources and publications related to the Geographical Sciences and others related.

Abstract (ENG):
This essay will focus on a case study of good practices in the field of projection and circulation of digital contents for humanistic research, starting from handwritten sources: the <e-codices - Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland> project. As is stated in the <e-codices> website, “the goal of the <e-codices> project is to provide access to all medieval and selected early modern manuscripts of Switzerland via a virtual library”, virtually reunifying dispersed handwritten collections. This goal was made possible thanks to the TEI-P5 standard, which “enables the exchange of metadata with other digitization projects, meta-search engines, and portal sites”.

Presso la sede della start-up New Digital Frontiers ospitata all’interno del Consorzio ARCA (costituito tra l’Università degli Studi di Palermo e un gruppo imprenditoriale privato per l’applicazione della ricerca e la creazione di aziende innovative votate alla ricerca scientifica) si è svolto un esperimento di digitalizzazione applicato a un prezioso libro manoscritto.
La start-up New Digital Frontiers è stata recentemente creata con la volontà di sperimentare in modo concreto l’approccio innovativo delle tecnologie informatiche al mondo della ricerca storica e umanistica in generale. Nell’ambito del progetto di ricerca BookAlive, della partnership con InformAmuse s.r.l. e della collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Culture e Società, la start-up New Digital Frontiers si è dotata di una particolare tipologia di scanner appositamente scelta sul mercato per le sue caratteristiche: si tratta dello scanner “ScanSnap SV600” della Fujitsu, un modello che rappresenta un buon compromesso tra caratteristiche hardware e costi. Trattandosi di un compatto scanner a sviluppo verticale, esso offre l’essenza di uno scanner planetario (presenta, infatti, l’unità ottica di acquisizione delle immagini e le sorgenti di illuminazione a luce fredda LED all’interno di una particolare testa mobile posta al di sopra dell’area di scansione) in un connubio senz’altro positivo tra costo d’acquisto e dimensioni del dispositivo.
Il dottor Fabio Cusimano - specializzato in studi medievali, sul libro antico e in Digital Humanities, collaboratore del Dipartimento di Culture e Società nell’ambito del progetto di ricerca BookAlive - ha realizzato la riproduzione digitale integrale di un prezioso volume manoscritto databile intorno al XV-XVI secolo e appartenente al patrimonio librario (Fondo Fitalia) della Biblioteca della Società Siciliana per la Storia Patria di Palermo: si tratta del manoscritto di cui alla segnatura “Mss. I.D.9”, cc. 1r-199r, catalogato con il titolo Faccius. De rebus gestarum Alphonsi regis.
Dopo un attento esame del volume, delle caratteristiche meccaniche della legatura (una legatura di restauro risalente approssimativamente al XIX secolo) e dello stato di conservazione dell’intero corpo delle carte (che, nelle fasi del restauro, ha subito un intervento di rifilatura sui tagli di testa, davanti e di piede, tutti spruzzati in verde), si è proceduto all’avvio del processo di digitalizzazione, nel corso del quale si sono potute apprezzare le caratteristiche positive dello scanner: l’area utile di scansione (libera e fruibile con semplicità fino al formato A3) ha permesso un ottimale posizionamento in piano del volume, nel pieno rispetto delle caratteristiche meccaniche della legatura; la qualità delle riproduzioni digitali (settabile in ogni parametro, come la risoluzione ottica in dpi, la profondità di colore, il formato grafico finale, ecc.) ha concesso l’opportunità di scegliere un giusto compromesso tra qualità e fruibilità: le riproduzioni digitali – destinate a costituire una copia sostitutiva per necessità di ricerca – sono state effettuate a una risoluzione di 300 dpi, in scala di grigi, formato JPEG.
L’intero processo di digitalizzazione è stato gestito con la massima semplicità, avendo sempre cura di manipolare il volume nel modo migliore possibile: proprio in questo caso lo scanner si è dimostrato particolarmente adatto ed efficace, poiché ha consentito di non forzare mai l’apertura delle pagine e soprattutto non ha sottoposto le stesse allo stress meccanico di una pressione di un piano in vetro, come spesso accade con l’utilizzo di altri dispositivi; l’illuminazione, garantita da due lampade a luce fredda LED, ha contribuito a illuminare in modo uniforme e progressivo l’intera area di scansione, non sottoponendo le carte a un dannoso irraggiamento UV. Il risultato finale è stato ottimale: sono state rapidamente realizzate più di duecento immagini digitali (con una velocità di acquisizione di circa tre secondi per ogni singola esposizione), raggiungendo una qualità finale adeguata alle necessità di leggibilità e ingrandimento delle stesse per motivi di studio; il contrasto cromatico della modalità in scala di grigi ha reso possibile la riproduzione omogenea del corpo del testo, vergato a più mani con un inchiostro bruno, delle parti rubricate (incipit ed explicit delle parti in cui l’opera è suddivisa), delle numerose glosse e note manoscritte apposte sui margini esterni e interni delle pagine da anonimi studiosi nel corso dei secoli, così come delle capitali decorate e di alcune decorazioni.

""The focus of the A.I.S. (Archaeological Information System) is the creation of a wide-ranging archive
relating to the archaeological landscape of the Alps. The webGIS was born and grew through several
projects (e.g. Alpinet, Apsat). During this time, it has fulfilled an important role as a tool for collaboration
between research partners. The process of cataloguing cultural heritage materials, starting from the
work of the ICCD (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione – Central Institute for Cataloguing
and Documentation ) and other important projects, has stimulated a methodological discussion
relating to the need for a shared standard regarding archaeological entities, definitions and their
characteristics. The webGIS platform comprises a geographical environment along with various
themes (archaeological sites, landscape units, infrastructure, dairying, place names, mining districts,
inscriptions left by shepherds, …) linked to a large dataset covering – in addition – non geographic information
related to the archaeology of the recorded entities (exploited minerals and mining phases,
stratigraphic units, occupational phases, elements of material culture and ecofacts, …). The main functions
available in the A.I.S. are archaeological querying, the visualization and printing of thematic maps,
a reserved area for research partners to exchange documents and information, and tools for risk
management. In addition other utilities are given for data import/export, finding places by name (the
‘address to’ service), maps and data entry, a back-up system and user profile administration. Recent
additions to the platform are a user-friendly interface for guests and the possibility of 3D visualization.

We present a new method (fFLASH) for the virtual screening of compound databases that is based on explicit three-dimensional molecular superpositions. fFLASH takes the torsional flexibility of the database molecules fully into account, and can deal with an arbitrary number of conformation-dependent molecular features. The method utilizes a fragmentation-reassembly approach which allows for an efficient sampling of the conformational space. A fast clique-based pattern matching algorithm generates alignments of pairs of adjacent molecular fragments on the rigid query molecule that are subsequently reassembled to complete database molecules. Using conventional molecular features (hydrogen bond donors and acceptors, charges, and hydrophobic groups) we show that fFLASH is able to rapidly produce accurate alignments of medium-sized drug-like molecules. Experiments with a test database containing a diverse set of 1780 drug-like molecules (including all conformers) have shown that average query processing times of the order of 0.1 seconds per molecule can be achieved on a PC.

The Gartner Group predicts that by 2011, 80% of those who use the Internet and Fortune 500 companies will be involved in virtual worlds. This is estimated to be 50–60 million people (Gartner Group Press Release, 2007). From April 2006 to July 2007, the virtual world of Second Life increased from 180,000 accounts to over 8 million, growing an average of 30% a month. The ultimate virtual world may or may not be Second Life; however, with the rapidly increasing use of programs like Second Life, World of Warcraft, and other worlds, virtual worlds are here to stay in one form or another. We think libraries need to be there too. Many individuals involved in virtual worlds may not be traditional library users. By putting ourselves where the users are, there is a great opportunity to increase use of the bricks and mortar library and to promote library services and materials. In this chapter we will discuss the virtual world of Second Life, what libraries are doing in Second Life, the successes and challenges of the project, partnerships with education, and why libraries are relevant in these worlds.

O trabalho propõe questionamento e criticidade quanto à adoção de expressões como “biblioteca virtual” ou “biblioteca digital” para conceituar o modelo de organização da informação na contemporaneidade. Contextualiza, histórica e culturalmente, as bibliotecas de modo a apresentar definições, tipologias e amplitude de definições de vários autores. Propõe o reescalonamento das bibliotecas pelo vetor do acesso à informação, haja vista a formação de redes para transferência de informações, a reconfiguração do tempo e do espaço ora vigentes e a forma com que as tecnologias computacionais afetam a criação, o uso, a gestão e o fluxo da informação, de modo a serem abordadas as bibliotecas
