Die Psychomachia des Prudentius stellt das erste vollkommen allegorische Epos des Abendlandes dar. Es ist insbesondere in der Kunst und Literatur des Mittelalters vielfältig rezipiert worden. Magnus Frisch legt nun erstmals einen Gesamtkommentar zu diesem Werk aus der Spätantike vor, der lange ein Desiderat der Forschung war. Er berücksichtigt die Erkenntnisse der philologischen, theologischen und mediävistischen Forschung der letzten Jahrzehnte.

Gegenstand dieser Dissertation ist ein zwischen 1989 und 1992 bei St. Andreas ausgegrabenes Reihengräberfeld. Insgesamt standen für die Auswertung über 400 archäologisch dokumentierte Bestattungen zur Verfügung. Ursprünglich dürfte der Bestattungsplatz wohl ca. 1.000 Gräber gezählt haben und gehört somit zu den größten frühmittelalterlichen Gräberfeldern Bayerns. Der Kern der Arbeit besteht aus der Gesamtvorlage der Gräber und Grabfunde sowie deren chronologischen Einordnung, welche die Basis für kulturhistorische Untersuchungen bilden. Mithilfe einer Korrespondenzanalyse der Glasperlen und einer der größten 14C-Serien innerhalb eines frühmittelalterlichen Gräberfelds (finanziert durch das Bayerische Landesamt für Denkmalpflege) konnte dessen Beginn auf die Zeit um 400 n. Chr. datiert werden. Damit stellt Altheim den bisher ersten Nachweis eines Reihengräberfeldes Altbayerns dar, das durchgehend von der Spätantike bis in die jüngere Merowingerzeit belegt wurde. Gerade dieser Aspekt erlaubt es der Studie, Überlegungen zu den Transformationsprozessen zwischen Antike und Mittelalter in der spätrömischen Provinz Raetia secunda am Beispiel von Altheim anzustellen.

378 yılında Roma İmparatorluğu ile bir Germen topluluğu olan Gotlar arasında günümüz Edirne ili sınırları içerisinde vuku bulan Hadrianapolis Savaşı, Geç Roma İmparatorluğu döneminde yaşanan en önemli olaylardan biridir. Nitekim bu zamana kadar Tuna Nehri’nin kuzeyinden gelen Germen göçlerini bir şekilde kontrol altında tutabilen Roma İmparatorluğu, bu tarihten itibaren Germen kabilelerine topraklarında yerleşim izni vermeye başlamıştır. İlerleyen süreçte yerleştikleri bölgelerde nüfuz kazanan Germen toplulukları gayri resmî bir şekilde imparatorluktan bağımsız hareket ederek Roma’nın zayıflamasına neden olmuştur. Ünlü Roma tarihçisi Gibbon’a göre de bu Germen baskısı Batı Roma İmparatorluğu’nun yıkılışına giden yoldaki en önemli unsurlardan biridir. Hadrianapolis Savaşı’nda çoğunluğu üzengi kullanan süvarilerden oluşan Got ordusunun üstün gelmesi, askeri anlamda da derin etkiler yaratan bir husustur. Piyade ağırlıklı Roma ordusunun Got süvarileri karşısında adeta ezilmesi Roma ordusunun süvari ağırlıklı bir düzene geçmesine neden olmuştur. Ayrıca ilerleyen süreçte Germen asıllı askerlerin orduya alınması ve ordu kademelerinde yükselmelerine izin verilmesi özellikle imparatorluğun batı yakasında savaş lordlarının ortaya çıkmasına zemin hazırlamıştır.

Standing at the top of the hierarchy, the Roman emperor embodied a unique position, which became visible through his outer appearance, clothing and insignia, but also through a certain posture, movements, and positioning among others – aspects that can be summarized under the term "habitus", coined by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Emperor Julian – infamous author of a satirical work titled "Beard-hater" and well known for his unusual appearance and flamboyant behaviour – has never been studied in the light of ancient body history. This paper aims to shed a light on how Julian repeatedly broke with the established protocol, while seemingly aiming to create a new reading of the ruler’s body. //
A wide variety of sources are consulted and compared. Central is the rich corpus of Julian's philosophical and satirical writings, which is examined with regard to Julian's peculiar, neoplatonic conception of the body. Also important are the numerous contemporary pagan and Christian sources on Julian. In addition, the archaeological and numismatic evidence is consulted. The different literary and iconographic images of the emperor are not regarded as purely top-down representations of the emperor, but the result of a dialogue between the different groups and actors. //
The analysis of Julian's self-testimonies reveals how Julian propagates an ideal body image that transfers abstract neoplatonic concepts of the body to the person of the ruler: physical asceticism and a long beard form the outward signs of a ruler with moral integrity. In the "Bearded Hater", Julian takes up these philosophical considerations again by portraying the inhabitants of Antioch, who mocked the emperor for his beard and his uncultured manner, as immoral, weak and effeminate. This reveals a particular way of dealing with contemporary gender stereotypes, but also a high degree of consistency in Julian's concept of the body across his various writings. //
The literary testimonies of contemporary authors convey an impression of how Julian's body was perceived by his contemporaries. One important theme is mockery, which repeatedly refers to Julian's unkempt appearance and often takes the form of animal comparisons. Another central aspect is the perception of Julian's public appearances: how the emperor moved and positioned himself in relation to others was subject to close observation and interpretation regarding his ability to rule. Divergent perspectives on the same events convey an impression of how the emperor’s behaviour was perceived and discussed by his contemporaries. Even within the otherwise projulianic tradition, one can find divergent assessments of Julian's behaviour, who repeatedly disregarded the established protocol. //
Finally, the "moving" emperor Julian is contextualized within the late antique imperial ceremonial. Julian's Constantinian predecessors staged themselves quite differently in public appearances, striving rather for a lofty, "statuesque" style. It becomes clear that Julian acted in a ceremonial in which certain ideas and expectations were placed on the ruler's body. Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 1829 und bis auf den heutigen Tag hat die Beschäftigung mit den archäologischen Hinterlassenschaften der frühchristlichen und spätantiken Zeit am Deutschen Archäologischen Institut (DAI) in Rom zwar nicht die wichtigste, aber immer eine durchaus bedeutende Rolle gespielt. Die folgenden Ausführungen zur Geschichte der Christlichen Archäologie an der Abteilung Rom seien, trotz des langen zu überblickenden Zeitraumes, auf eine-relativ-kurze Übersicht beschränkt, denn erst vor Kurzem hat Martin Dennert einen gründlich recherchierten Aufsatz zur Christlichen Archäologie am DAI insgesamt publiziert, der hier in Bezug auf die Abteilung Rom zusammengefasst werden kann 1. Dem seien jedoch einige Beobachtungen über das Panorama der Christlichen Archäologie in Rom generell und die dynamisch wechselnden Realitäten des politisch-kulturellen Umfeldes, in dem sie betrieben wurde, hinzugefügt, zudem sind einige Aspekte zu jüngsten Entwicklungen ergänzt.

Die veröffentlichten Ergebnisse der Grabungen am Kastell Saarbrücken bieten nur einen ersten Einblick in die Geschichte der Anlage, wobei mehrere Fragen zur Fertigstellung, Datierung und Funktion offen bleiben.
Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt Interpretationsmöglichkeiten auf und stellt mögliche weitere Maßnahmen vor, mittels derer neue Rückschlüsse zu den offenen Fragen gezogen werden könnten. Die zentrale Frage bei dem Kastell Saarbrücken, ob es jemals fertig gestellt wurde oder nicht, konnte im Rahmen dieser Arbeit aufgrund der schwierigen Quellenlage nicht geklärt werden.

Figürliche Bilder christlich-biblischen Inhalts entstehen erst ab dem 3. Jahrhundert. Im Westen sind sie etwa in der Katakombenmalerei in Rom und Neapel erhalten, im Osten etwa in Gräbern in Thessaloniki oder natürlich im Kultraum in Dura Europos. Aber wie hat man sich die Entstehung und Verbreitung der Bilder in ihrer Dynamik vorzustellen? Wie kommunizieren in dieser Hinsicht Zentrum und Peripherie, gibt es einen Bildtransfer, entstehen die Bilder im Zentrum und wandern dann von dort?
Es scheint aufgrund der archäologischen Befunde möglich, die Frage nach der Bildschöpfung und Bildverbreitung zu einem kohärenten Gesamtbild zusammenzufügen. Allerdings ist die Fragestellung zu komplex, als dass sie an dieser Stelle umfassend aufgearbeitet werden könnte. Daher sei versucht, hier zumindest einige zentrale Aspekte der Forschung zu umreißen, um unseren Zugang zu dem Problem und die Art der Fragestellung nach Zentrum oder Peripherie sowie unsere derzeitigen Antworten besser zu verstehen, vielleicht zu schärfen bzw. zu aktualisieren.

Fue en Tréveris donde encontró la muerte en el año 385 Prisciliano. Atrás quedaban seis años de encarnizada lucha con sus opositores. Finalizaba así una azarosa vida de modo cruento. Nadie podía pensar entonces que la leyenda de Prisciliano habría sobrevivido hasta nuestros días, ni imaginar que su muerte habría dado inicio a un conflicto en el episcopado que se prolongaría durante casi trescientos años; y mucho menos que acabaría convirtiéndose en un mártir para sus seguidores. En el presente libro el autor nos ofrece la primera biografía histórica sobre Prisciliano, un controvertido personaje de gran importancia para la historia de occidente que hasta ahora ha sido considerado por los diferentes autores que se han aproximado a su figura como hereje, reformador, mártir apócrifo o cristiano inconformista; y analiza las intrincadas cuestiones de su lugar de nacimiento, la ubicación de su sepultura o la datación de los diferentes episodios de su vida, empleando para ello la voz de los protagonistas de la época en la que vivió Prisciliano y haciendo uso de todas las fuentes disponibles para reconstruir su biografía.

The importance that the Priscilianist movement had in the history of the Late Antique Hispania contrasts with the meager presence of archaeological remains that today can be reliably linked back to Priscilian and his adherents. To outline an “archaeo- logy of Priscilianism” arises from the start as a challenging and very ambitious task, which without doubt explains the lack of rigorous studies on the subject. In this paper we will try to fill this gap, analizing those elements of material culture that can be linked with Priscilianism. We will conclude our work with an analysis of the amulet born by Priscilian.

Der politikgeschichtlich orientierte Aufsatz untersucht das Verhältnis Ricimers zu den während seiner Amtszeit als magister militum regierenden weströmischen Kaisern. Insbesondere fragt er danach, inwiefern Ricimer zum Fall des weströmischen Kaisertums beigetragen hat. Neben den antiken Quellen stützt sich der Aufsatz auf ältere und jüngste Forschungsliteratur (insbesondere Anders 2010 und folgende Arbeiten). Er zeigt Forschungskontroversen auf und eröffnet am Schluss weitergehende Perspektiven der Forschung zu den Heermeistern des fünften Jahrhunderts.

The so-called „Bouleuerion Court“ is located in the city center of Aphrodisias immediately to the south of the Temple of Aphrodite. It encloses the city’s Bouleuterion which was built around 200 A.D. This article covers the history of this area from the late Hellenistic and early Imperial periods to the Middle Byzantine era, based on architecture, archaeology, and inscriptions. It becomes evident that a thorough evaluation of archival materials from the 1960s provides valuable insight into stratigraphy and finds.
From the early Imperial period to the second half of the 2nd century, the “Bouleuterion Court” served as the urban center and meeting place of the boule. During the late Antonine or Severan period the senator Attalos erected a new Bouleuterion for the city council. Following the decline of urban institutions, the north stoa of the court housed a sculptor’s workshop. According to an inscription from around 500 A.D., the Bouleuterion was repurposed as a palaistra and probably used for sporting competitions such as wrestling and boxing. Probably due to the raising water table in the city, the level of the entire court was raised. From the second half of the 6th century onwards, archaeological evidence implies that the area fell into decline. Remains of an olive press facility and graves can both be dated to the Middle Byzantine period. The latter ones can be connected to the conversion of the Temple of Aphrodite into a church. All in all, it can be said that the history of the Bouleuterion does not only mirror the past the entire city, but is also connected to the political and cultural development of Asia Minor.

Vor allem die Provinzialrömische Archäologie und die Geschichtsforschung konnten in den letzten Jahrzehnten nachweisen, dass die spätrömische Herrschaft in der Raetia secunda nicht um 400 n. Chr. beendet war, sondern dass die Grenzverteidigung an der Donau mindesten bis zur Mitte des 5. Jhs. und wohl noch darüber hinaus funktionierte. Trotzdem wirft der konkrete Übergang zum Frühmittelalter noch viele Fragen auf. Dem bisherigen Forschungsstand zufolge, treten etwa zeitgleich mit dem Abbrechen der Grenzkastellnekropolen um 450 n. Chr. in der Provinz Raetia secunda vereinzelt neue Bestattungsplätze auf: Die sog. Reihengräberfelder. Aufgrund dieses mutmaßlichen Bruchs in der Jahrhundertmitte wurde die Reihengräberkultur stets als kultureller Neuanfang beurteilt, der einhergehend mit der militärischen Aufgabe der Provinz hauptsächlich durch Zuwanderern von außerhalb des Römischen Reiches geprägt war. Mithilfe der Radiokarbonanalyse konnte im Falle des Reihengräberfelds von Altheim der Beginn eines solchen in die Zeit um 400 n. Chr. verschoben werden. Damit wird der Friedhof ein halbes Jahrhundert lang parallel zu den spätrömischen Nekropolen an der Donaugrenze belegt und weist damit eine eindeutige Kontinuität von der Spätantike bis zur ausgehenden Merowingerzeit auf. Mit Sicherheit kann dies nun auch für andere „frühmittelalterlichen“ Reihengräberfelder angenommen werden, was u. a. mit Hilfe der für Altheim erstellten und mit 14C-Daten verifizierten Perlenchronologie überprüft werden kann. Ein überregionaler Vergleich der zeitgenössischen Bestattungssitten ergab, dass die Proto-Reihengräberkultur am Übergang vom 4. zum 5. Jh. innerhalb der spätrömischen Provinzen entstanden sein muss und im Laufe der ersten Hälfte des 5. Jhs. in die benachbarten Gebiete hinausgetragen wurde. Durch zunehmende Kontakte über die Reichsgrenze hinweg bildete sich ein gemeinsamer Kommunikationsraum, der sich archäologisch in der ausgeprägten Reihengräberkultur ab der zweiten Hälfte des 5. Jhs. manifestiert.

Prisciliano y el movimiento que se originó en torno a él perturbaron el occidente del imperio entre los siglos IV y VII, siendo el priscilianismo una de las principales herejías de la pars occidentis, y convirtiéndose el heresiarca en una de las más afamadas figuras del cristianismo, al acarrear la funesta gloria de ser el primer obispo juzgado y ejecutado por un tribunal civil. En el presente volumen, hemos analizado los datos que la arqueología puede ofrecer a la hora de reconstruir la historia del priscilianismo y hemos abordado un análisis prosopográfico para indagar acerca del status social de los miembros del movimiento, recopilando, a partir de las fuentes disponibles, a todos los priscilianistas y antipriscilianistas conocidos hasta que el priscilianismo desaparece de las fuentes. Nuestro estudio nos ha llevado a una conclusión fundamental que hemos diseñado a lo largo de este trabajo: el priscilianismo fue un movimiento de carácter aristocrático que nació y creció en el seno de las clases pudientes de la sociedad tardorromana. Y dicho movimiento alcanzó un desarrollo excepcional en la provincia de Gallaecia tras el fallecimiento de Prisciliano y algunos de sus seguidores en Tréveris, en el año 385.

Das interdisziplinären Projekt „Kleidung und Identität/Clothing and Identities – New Perspectives on Textiles in the Roman Empire (DressID)“ befasste sich mit der Erforschung der kulturellen Einheit und Vielfalt sowie ihre Widerspiegelung in den Textilien und Trachten innerhalb des Römischen Imperiums. Aus Österreich konnten im Rahmen des Projektes bis Februar 2010 128 Textilien aus dem Zeitraum zwischen dem Ende des 3. und des 5. Jhs. erfasst werden. Dabei handelt es sich vor allem um Textilien aus spätantiken Körpergräbern, die meist durch Metallkorrosion erhalten blieben.

The study of Christianity in this region is a fundamental theme to understand the historical dynamics of this province and also the later transformations. Although the study of the many Roman villas in Gallaecia is unfortunately still far behind today, we know some elements that we can associate with Christianity (and perhaps priscillianism) that have been found in rural housing contexts. Precisely for this rea- son it is essential to analyze the dating of these finds, their context, and try to examine the beginnings of Christianity in the region using all the available data. In this work we will analyze all the archaeological finds found from the villas of Gallaecia that can offer interesting information about the origin of Christianity in this province, with the aim of bringing new light to the study of this topic, not forgetting the role played by priscillianism in this area.
