French ecocriticism

Après une brève comparaison entre l'écocritique américaine (Glotfelty et Fromm, Buell) et l'écocritique française (Stéphanie Posthumus, Alain Suberchicot), cette communication a pour but d'explorer les plus récents travaux sur le paysage en philosophie et en géographie (Alain Roger, Augustin Berque) et de questionner la notion d' « artialisation » (Roger) avec celles d' « écoumène » et de « médiance ».

En explorant brièvement les travaux de Michel Collot sur le paysage littéraire, la dernière partie de cette communication vise à questionner les méthodes et enjeux d'une lecture écocritique des paysages littéraires.

While ecocriticism has taken its place on the stage of literary and critical theory in the Anglophone world, its reception in France has been lukewarm. In this article, I outline the cultural differences that contribute to the slow emergence of a French écocritique. Taking my cue from comparative literary studies and ethnography, I carefully avoid the construction of culture as an unchanging whole or a set of clichés and stereotypes. Instead, I explore a kaleidoscope of linguistic, historical, geographical differences that offer one view for constructing a French écocritique. While acknowledging the influence of ecocriticism in the Anglophone world, I argue that a French écocritique cannot simply be a translation of the English word. It must reflect the changing colours of the philosophical and literary landscape in question. To do so, it needs to take into account literary approaches such as écopoétique and géocritique that have emerged in France over the last ten to fifteen years to address the question of the relationship between literature and ecology, and between literature and place, respectively. At the same time, a French écocritique differs from these other approaches by developing a politically informed reading of literary texts. While many different eco-political orientations can be taken, I draw on the non-dualistic, nature-culture thinking of Félix Guattari and Michel Serres to articulate the concepts of ecological subjectivity and ecological dwelling. Reading fiction by French contemporary authors Marie Darrieussecq and Marie-Hélène Lafon, I identify the ways in which novels illustrate and challenge ecological concepts. As it emerges, French écocritique brings literature and ecological thinking together without subordinating one to the other. It engages with cultural differences while remaining aware of the limitations of its own attempts to trouble French literary studies.

F.T. Marinetti annonce à plusieurs reprises, mais le plus explicitement peut-être dans L'Homme multiplié et le Règne de la machine (1910), la prochaine naissance d'un être hybride issu du rapprochement entre l'homme et la machine. On lit souvent ces lignes sérieusement, en oubliant volontiers celles qui suivent, dans lesquelles Marinetti propose (sérieusement toujours ?) une étonnante sorte d'éthique de l'animal de compagnie. De même, on ne prête en général pas attention aux nombreuses métaphores et comparaisons animales présentes dans le prologue du premier manifeste du futurisme. Or ces lignes, ainsi que d'autres, précisent et nuancent une certaine doxa critique selon laquelle le monde annoncé par Marinetti serait uniquement mécanique — il s'agit ici, dans une perspective écocritique, de l'esquisser.

Cet article propose une lecture écocritique du roman de Waldemar Bonsels Indienfahrt (1916) axée sur les représentations de l’animal au croisement de différents imaginaires (mythologique, religieux, littéraire, scientifique…). La question du traitement éthique des animaux est-elle au centre du récit ? La frontière entre humanité et animalité est-elle remise en question ? Indienfahrt peut-il être considéré comme un texte environnemental véhiculant une sorte de contre-discours écologique ? La réponse apportée est nuancée : si le roman se rapproche par certains aspects de la littérature environnementale (ré-enchantement de la nature, critique de l’anthropocentrisme, profond respect du Vivant, nostalgie d’une nature sauvage…), il n’en remplit pas tous les critères : la responsabilité humaine de l’homme envers la nature et la dé-verticalisation des relations homme / animal sont finalement limitées, tandis que les représentations de l’animal restent profondément ambivalentes, entre néoromantisme et darwinisme social, entre idéal indien de la non-violence et mythe germanique de l’héroïsme. Nous émettons toutefois l’hypothèse que l’immense succès de ce roman de voyage et d’aventure dans les années vingt, tient moins à sa démarche herméneutique interculturelle qu’à la « leçon de nature » que le singe Huc, et à travers lui le monde animal dans son ensemble, délivre à l’homme occidental fatigué d’une civilisation qui a révélé toute sa barbarie lors de la Grande Guerre.

Die Botschaft des Tieres in Waldemar Bonsels’ Indienfahrt (F)

Dieser Aufsatz bietet eine ökologische Lesart von Waldemar Bonsels’ Roman Indienfahrt (1916) an, die auf Tierdarstellungen am Schnittpunkt verschiedener Vorstellungswelten (seien sie mythologisch, religiös, literarisch, wissenschaftlich, usw.) fokussiert. Steht die Frage einer ethischen Behandlung der Tiere im Zentrum des Werkes? Ist die Grenze zwischen Tier und Mensch in Frage gestellt? Zählt der Reise- und Abenteuerroman zu der Umweltliteratur und vermittelt er eine Art ökologischen Gegendiskurs? Die Antwort ist zwiespältig: einerseits rücken viele Aspekte (Wiederverzauberung der Natur, Kritik am Anthropozentrismus, tiefer Respekt vor dem Lebendigen, Sehnsucht nach einer wilden Natur, usw.) Indienfahrt in die Nähe der Umweltliteratur, andererseits weicht das Werk aus verschiedenen Gründen von den Kriterien der Umweltliteratur ab: Die Verantwortung des Menschen der Natur gegenüber und die Ent-hierarchisierung der Verhältnisse zwischen Tier und Mensch erweisen sich als begrenzt und die Tierdarstellungen bleiben zutiefst zwiespältig, zwischen Neuromantik und Sozialdarwinismus, indischem Ideal der Nichttötens und germanischem Mythos des Heldentums. Wir stellen dennoch die Hypothese auf, dass der riesengroße Erfolg Bonsels’ Romans in den zwanziger Jahren weniger an seiner interkulturellen Hermeneutik liegt, als an der ‚Naturlehre‘, die der Affe Huc, und durch ihn die ganze Tierwelt, dem westlichen Menschen erteilt, der jener Zivilisation überdrüssig ist, die im Ersten Weltkrieg ihre absolute Barbarei enthüllt hat.

French Écocritique is the first book-length study of the culturally specific ways in which　contemporary French literature and theory raise questions about nature and environment. Stephanie Posthumus’s ground-breaking work brings together thinkers such as Guattari, Latour, and Serres with recent ecocritical theories to complicate what might otherwise become a reductive notion of "French ecocriticism." Working across contemporary philosophy and literature, the book defines the concept of the ecological as an attentiveness to specific nature-culture contexts and to a text’s many interdiscursive connections. Posthumus identifies four key concepts, ecological subjectivity, ecological dwelling, ecological politics, and ecological ends, for changing how we think about human-nature relations. French Écocritique highlights the importance of moving beyond canonical ecocritical texts and examining a diversity of cultural and literary traditions for new ways of imagining the environment.

In the framework of contemporary ecocritical and posthumanist theories, this comparative analysis of works by Paolo Mantegazza, Ouida, and Vernon Lee focuses on the conflictual relationship of proximity and differentiation at stake in the human-animal distinction in a post-Darwinian context dominated by the rise of experimental sciences. A discussion of vivisection and animal taming prompted by anthropocentric works as Mantegazza's _Fisiologia del dolore_ and _Upilio Faimali_ in tension with pro-animal essays by Ouida and Vernon Lee shows how the animal, caught between pure inert materiality and idealization, emerges as an intrinsic lack that the human fills with contending rational, utilitarian, moral, and affective motivations.

A pioneer of political ecology, Bernard Charbonneau (1910-1996) viewed freedom and nature as jointly threatened by the "second nature" of technological society (whose critique by his friend Jacques Ellul owed much to him), defined by total mobilization as revealed in world wars as in industrial development. Its roots intertwine with those of the modern State made possible by the Christian distinction of the spiritual from the sacred violence inherent in religion and politics, returning unchecked in both guises. Charbonneau's thought thus provides an ecological counterpoint to René Girard's mimetic theory.

This edited volume expounds fruitful ways of analysing matters of ecology, environments, nature, and the non-human world in a broad spectrum of material in French. Scholars from Canada, France, Great Britain, Spain, and the United States examine the work of writers and thinkers including Michel de Montaigne, Victor Hugo, Émile Zola, Arthur Rimbaud, Marguerite Yourcenar, Gilbert Simondon, Michel Serres, Michel Houellebecq, and Éric Chevillard. The diverse approaches in the volume signal a common desire to bring together form and content, politics and aesthetics, theory and practice, under the aegis of the environmental humanities

There exists a general consensus in literature and the arts about the aggravated global eco-inequality in the twenty-first century cityscape, often illustrated by images of waste collecting systems gone wrong—in Naples, for instance—and overflowing dumpsters, as in the recent French documentary Supertrash. However, as ecological movements and environmental scholars are quick to denounce garbage scandals and to emphasize sustainable urban initiatives, it is imperative to return to the genesis of waste in urbanism in order to conceptualize the contemporary notion of garbage.
In his book La ville radieuse (1933), Le Corbusier exposed his plans and the philosophy behind his utilitarian approach to urbanism. Indeed, urbanism itself was first created from the idea of refusing waste: the wasting of time, resources, and energy that led to the denouncing as impractical of cities in the 1930s. Le Corbusier’s own discourse on waste deserves study in order to fully grasp the problematics of contemporary “abstainers,” as one New York Times article calls them. Decades later, what is the influence of Le Corbusier concept of waste in the city? It seems that Le Corbusier’s key ideas, which I will discuss, have consciously or unconsciously been recovered by several ecological figures. Curiously enough, what used to be a social concern for him now has become a source of profit and fame for privileged liberals in relatively opulent neighborhoods. This raises the question: can the impoverished actually afford to care about waste? Through an analysis of mediatized movements of abstention, such as “Zero Waste Home” or “No Impact Man”, I interrogate the “other side” of garbage in the city, tracing its trajectory from abstention to redemption.

In his article "Ecocriticism and Persian and Greek Myths about the Origin of Fire" Massih Zekavat argues that some contemporary ecological biases are rooted in ancient thought. Further, Zekavat argues that the study of mythology is relevant to the understanding of culture and ecology thus assisting ecocriticism. The investigation of man/woman, culture/nature, and human/nature binary oppositions conveys that Greek and Persian myths are mostly anthropocentric and androcentric. Zekavat postulates that one way to revise contemporary ecological conceptions is to study myths to shed light on the mind and context of their creators and believers, their representation of natural phenomena, and their continuous impact on future generations through their adaptive and appropriative resonances in cultural production.

Les « études françaises », de par le syntagme lui-même, renvoient déjà vers une
redistribution des disciplines « humanistes », opération ayant déjà eu lieu d’abord
dans la culture anglo-saxonne. Dire « études françaises » au lieu de, par exemple,
« histoire de la littérature » met en question d’emblée un certain universalisme
nominaliste que notre étude voudrait interroger depuis les positions d’une perspective (idéalement) doublement extérieure : par rapport au paradigme des « studies », dont la tache aveugle serait précisément le lieu de leur invention, car on
ne dit jamais « American Studies » pour parler de « post-structuralisme », par
exemple, et par rapport au paradigme de la « littérature générale », ou bien « poétique » ou bien encore « philologie », puisque chaque terme relève d’une certaine
tradition qu’il faut spécifier.
