Dominican Theology

In order to understand the introduction of Thomism into Byzantium, one should start with the Dominican professor who introduced Demetrius Cydones to Thomism. This article fills the void  by connecting East and West prior to Plested´s discussion of the reception of St. Thomas in Byzantium in his recently published "Orthodox Reading of Aquinas."
The present article serves to connect Demetrius Cydones to the Dominicans he knew and admired, as well as their educational system in Pera. This project was started in 2009 per the invitation of Walter Senner, OP, to whom I'm eternally grateful for his encouragement and request for the following study.

Trotz der Wahl des "Hoffnungsträgers" liberal orientierter Iraner, Hassan Rohani, zum Präsidenten der Islamischen Republik im Juni 2013 hält der Druck auf christliche Gemeinden in Iran an. Mit zunehmender Tendenz werden persischsprachige Christen und Iraner muslimischer Herkunft u. a. am Besuch christlicher Gottesdienste und Zusammenkünfte gehindert. Neben evangelischen und freikirchlichen Gemeinden ist seit August desselben Jahres auch die katholische Kirche in Gestalt der Dominikanerpfarrei in Teheran von staatlichen Repressalien betroffen. Nicht erst seit der Freiburger Konzerthausrede Papst Benedikts XVI. vom 25. September des vergangenen Jahres steht die "Weltlichkeit" der Kirche zur Debatte. Vielmehr lassen sich die seit langem virulenten Konflikte um Hierarchie, Autorität und Zentralismus versus Partizipation, Dialog und Autonomie als Folge eines zweifelhaften Kirche-Welt-Verhältnisses deuten. Theologischer Sprengstoff liegt darin, beide Größen als einen Gegensatz zu konstruieren, in dem sich Kirche und Welt in nichtssagender Fremdheit asymmetrisch gegenüberstehen. (...)

Das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil (1962-1965) hat eine Bewegung der Erneuerung und Veränderung innerhalb der katholischen Kirche in Gang gesetzt, die längst noch nicht abgeschlossen ist. Wir stimmen mit Karl Rahner SJ und seiner grundsätzlichen theologischen Deutung überein, dass das II. Vatikanum „der erste amtliche Selbstvollzug der Kirche als Weltkirche“  war. Damit hat das Konzil den dominierenden Einfluss der Europäer auf die Katholizität der Kirche beendet. Mit weitsichtigem Scharfsinn sah Rahner voraus, dass der Prozess der Schaffung einer authentisch polyzentrischen Weltkirche, einschließlich der Bewältigung ihrer inneren Differenzen, Zeit bräuchte. Tatsächlich dachte Rahner an ein ganzes Jahrhundert! Deshalb ist es nun unsere Aufgabe, sich mit den Fragen der Globalisierung von Kirche und Gesellschaft zu befassen. (...)

A community of particular significance in the development of Mesopotamian-Iraqi Christian life in the modern era was (and is) the Dominican Order which has had a sustained presence since the 18th century. This article serves as an overview of Dominican contributions to Syriac Christian life in Mesopotamia and reflects on the Order's presence as part of the traditional plurality of Iraqi society. Notwithstanding the rise of Da'esh/ISIL since June 2014 multiple religious traditions continue to exist in Iraq. The willingness of wider Iraqi society to accept a Christian presence is easily forgotten in contemporary narratives which focus on sectarian discourses and avoid acknowledging that the Middle East is not dichotomous in perpetuity: there are wider considerations than Jewish-Muslim, Arab-Kurd, Arab-Persian &c. Moreover, while Islam is an ever present reality in the modern and contemporary Middle East, it is not the only reality.

THOMAS AND THE THOMISTS (Fortress Press 2017) serves as an introduction to the life of Aquinas, the major contours of his teaching, and the lasting contribution he made to Christian thought. Romanus Cessario, O.P., and Cajetan Cuddy, O.P., also outline the history of the Thomist tradition from the medieval era through revival in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This volume affords its readers a working guide to understanding the history of Aquinas and his expositors as well as to grasping their significance for us today.

This manuscript, a collection of theological texts, from the Dominican Monastery of Basel, consists of various parts; it alone transmits the complete Latin translation of Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit by Mechthild of Magdeburg. The manuscript is remarkable not only because of its age (around or shortly before 1350), but also because of the numerous marginal notes, which reveal knowledge of the German version of the text, with which this copy of the Latin translation of Fließenden Lichts was being compared.

Diese aus mehreren Teilen zusammengesetzte theologische Sammelhandschrift aus dem Dominikanerkloster in Basel überliefert als einzige die vollständige lateinische Übersetzung des Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit Mechthilds von Magdeburg. Bemerkenswert ist diese Handschrift nicht nur wegen ihres Alters (um bzw. kurz vor 1350) sondern auch wegen der zahlreichen Marginalien, die die Kenntnis der deutschen Textversion erkennen lassen, mit der die vorliegende Abschrift der lateinischen Übersetzung des Fließenden Lichts offenbar verglichen wurde.

Ce manuscrit composé de plusieurs parties contient un recueil de textes théologiques et provient du Couvent des Dominicains de Bâle. Il est le seul à transmettre la traduction latine complète du Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit Mechthilds de Magdeburg. Ce manuscrit est important non seulement en raison de sa date (peu avant 1350), mais aussi en raison des nombreuse notes marginales qui laissent percevoir une connaissance directe de la version allemande du texte, avec laquelle la présente copie de la traduction latine du Fließenden Lichts fut apparemment comparée.

Questo manoscritto composto di varie parti, contenente una raccolta di testi a carattere teologico e proveniente dal convento dei domenicani di Basilea, è l’unico a trasmettere la traduzione latina completa del Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit di Mechthild di Magdeburgo. Questo manoscritto è importante non solo per la sua datazione (intorno o poco prima del 1350) ma per la presenza di numerose annotazioni marginali che lasciano intravedere una conoscenza diretta della versione tedesca del testo, con il quale evidentemente la presente versione della traduzione latina del Fließenden Lichts venne confrontata.

The commentaries composed by the English theologian Nicholas Trevet at the beginning of the fourteenth century not only bear witness to his connections with Santa Maria Novella. They also testify to the importance of his contribution to the transfer of knowledge about Antiquity and the rebirth of antiquarianism in the Italian peninsula. Trevet elaborated his commentary on Boethius' De consolatione Philosophiae around 1304-1307 following a request made by Paolo dei Pilastri, a well-known member of the Dominican convent in Florence. Around 1315, Trevet wrote a commentary on Seneca's Tragedies at the invitation of the cardinal Niccolò da Prato, another Tuscan Dominican. As these requests show, Tuscan Friars deemed Trevet one of the best commentators of his generation. The manuscript circulation confirms further that his works were intensively consulted throughout the Trecento by Italian readers. From these premises, this essay argues that Trevet's Scholastic commentaries, presented as an expositio, met the need that Italian intellectuals had of a fuller understanding of classic literature, pagan mythology and Roman history. In other words, at the beginning of the fourteenth century, Italian cultivated readers did not yet have the educational background necessary to approach these works from Antiquity and Late Antiquity thoroughly. Therefore, they appealed to the tools elaborated within the Scholastic movement, especially in Oxford and Paris. In conclusion, the making and reception of Trevet's commentaries invite us to redesign the intellectual cartography of the beginning of the fourteenth century: in this broader framework, Santa Maria Novella appears to have occupied a peripheral and yet crucial position in the global transfer of knowledge promoted by the Dominican order.

Am 9. Februar 2017, kurz nach Vollendung seines 91. Lebensjahres, verstarb in Paris Claude Geffré. Der französische Dominikaner, der sich Zeit seines Lebens mit zeitgenössischen gesellschaftlichen Fragen in theologisch-systematischer Perspektive auseinandersetzte, zählt zu den profiliertesten Theologen der postkonziliaren Ära. Bekannt wurde Geffré vor allem durch sein Projekt einer „hermeneutischen Theologie“, das für eine stets neue Vermittlung der christlichen Botschaft zu den Gegenwartserfahrungen der Menschen plädiert. Im Zuge der hermeneutischen ‚Wende‘ in der Theologie befasste sich Geffré ab den 1980er Jahren intensiv mit religionstheologischen Fragen. Seine standortgebundene „christliche Theologie des religiösen Pluralismus“ unternimmt den Versuch, die Spannung zwischen dem christlichen Anspruch auf die (Heils-)Universalität Jesu Christi und der Vielfalt anderer Religionen, gerade in ihrer Differenz zur christlichen Botschaft, theologisch zu deuten.
