A series of bills that would give gamblers the ability to vote on legalizing casinos, sportsbetting, and lottery services in the state of Alabama has passed through the state's House of Representatives and will now move to the Senate for debate and a vote.
The bills, which are officially known as House Bill 151 and House Bill 152, advanced through the House. House Bill 151 passed with 70 votes in favor and 32 votes against. House Bill 152 passed with 67 yes votes and 31 votes against.
House Bill 151 would put the measures on the general election 2024 ballot in November to approve the activities, while House Bill 152 covers the taxation and regulation of the activities. If passed, House Bill 152 will establish the Alabama Gaming Commission, Alabama Lottery Corporation, and a Gaming Enforcement Division.
Casino gambling would be taxed at 24% on revenues, with 95% going toward a gaming trust fund. That trust fund would distribute money to different initiatives, including mental health groups. Sportsbetting would be taxed at 17% on revenues, with most of the proceeds also going to the trust fund, but also going toward law enforcement.
Casino Listings News is following the progress of the bills and will be updating readers as appropriate.
