Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Wide gun arc
- Superstructure is well armoured against same tier and some higher tier guns, cupula is not a weakspot
- Almost immune to ramming due to weight and decent top speed makes its own ramming attacks a viable tactic
- good all round armour, great at side scraping when angled correctly.
- Good DPM, dispersion and handling on its gun
Cons:
- Somewhat low penetration for a TD
- Large lower plate weak spot
- low traverse speed
- pre-angled turret cheeks are deceptively weak, over-angling turns them into weak spots
- Low gun depression angles
Performance
The KV-4 KTTS is a tank you need to get used to. Its unusual design can leave you scratching your head as to how one shot penetrates you, while another bounces. Its armour and weight can lead you into thinking its good at brawling. While this CAN work in some cases but only against its own tier or lower and not while out numbered, the armour is good for its tier, but only if you know how to angle it, not just the hull, but the enclosed turret too. The very front of the turret is 250 mm thick, but the pre-angled cheeks are half that amount, so the best results are to angle the hull one way and to angle the turret the other way, doing this correctly while side scraping will cover one weak spot while turning the other into an auto bounce zone.
The gun is good in many areas and quite easy to use, the 360 alpha damage is a little low for a Russian TD, but you can get the reload down to 6 seconds with the right loadout and crew skills. That along with the decent dispersion values make it dangerous at any range. However the low depression angle of 5 degrees make fighting from high ground difficult and the low penetration value of the shells can make fighting heavy tanks a headache. But the accuracy is good enough to snipe weak points from medium range easy enough, plus your own armour will do its best work at that range too.
The real gimmick of this tank though is the surprisingly high top speed for a tank weighing 100 tonnes. Using a turbo along with additional grousers will get your speed to 39kph, its not quite as good as the KV-5 at ramming but its not far off. The heavy weight of the tank will also help with pushing flankers in front of you too, because you literally can't be pushed around, it will be easy to 'scrape' a tank clinging to your side against a wall and into the wide cone of fire of your gun.
An unusual but effective when played correctly TD, the KV-4 KTTS can be a real terror in the hands of a good player, its reliable gun coupled with good armour and weight make it a solid 'mobile bunker' assault gun. DO NOT FACE HUG TALLER TANKS! Your hull roof is only 40mm and can be easily overmatched by anything the KV-4 KTTS's own tier or higher.
