Siren
Sirens or Mermaids are a race of creatures with the upper half of a female human or elf and the lower body of a sea creature. [1a]
They are notoriously reticent to deal with other races in any but a hostile manner and although they mainly feed on other sea creatures, they don't object to eating humans. [1a] Some scholars consider them a form of mutant like Beastmen.[2a]
Appearance
Although legends say they have the upper body of a human (or Elf) female and the lower half of a fish, they actually vary considerably in appearance with different strains or family groups. Although some do have the lower torso akin to that of a scaled fish, while others have octopus-like tentacles or serpent bodies. [1a]
History
According to the Cult of Manann that the first Sirens were born of a tryst between the God and a powerful Naiad but that she was also sharing her charms with Stromfels, the shark god of pirates and thus Sirens take after the nature of one or both of their ‘fathers’. [1a]
It is said that the navigator families of Tobaro encourage them to sabotage their rivals, bribing them with jewellery. [1a]
Locations
Many are found on the islands of the Carvorna Archipelago that protects Tobaro and which are also known as the Isle of Sirens. [1a] However they can also be found on many rocky stretches of coast [2b] with wreckers sometimes frequenting these areas to loot the bodies of the dead knowing that they take nothing themselves. This can only be attempted with ears filled with wax! [2a]
They are also often seen near Erengrad and are called Rusalki by the locals who consider them a version of the Banshee who are seeking revenge on menfolk. [2a]
Mermaids
In Marienburg they call these creatures Mermaids and even use one carrying a sword and purse of gold on their seal. [1b]
Religion
Doktor Brauer notes that they worship Triton. [2a]
Weapons and Equipment
All have wicked claws, though some can apparently conceal them, extending them only when prey is within reach. [1a]
