Stanley Brass cased Sighting Compass, British, Nautical Instrument, sailing
This is a neat brass Stanley made sighting compass from England. Even though the name Stanley is not written on it. It is identical to other marked Stanley made compasses. It is all brass and comes in a very nice wooden box with a Nautical brass inlaid anchor. It has a Sine angle numeric table built onto its top cover. When you open the top lid of the compass, it frees up the compass needle to move. When the top lid is down, it locks the compass needle in place. There is a sighting bar on the front that you can line up with a hole in the base of the mirror for taking direction readings. Inside of the compass there are two bubble levels for leveling the compass when taking readings. Plus these levels are mounted on a slider that you can adjust back and forth by means of a lever arm on the underside of the compass. This compass is 2.75 inches ... morewide, 3.0 inches long, and 1.5 inches thick. There is a little discoloration on the Sine table plaque from a fingerprint stain. Also the sighting hole in the base of the mirror seems to be partially blocked from some extra silver mirroring. Outside of these small defects, this is a very delicate and fine measuring instrument. John E. Hand& Sons was begun by British immigrant John Hand just after his arrival in the United States in 1872. At the age of 21. He was an ambitious and talented instrument maker. He opened for business on York Street in Philadelphia where he manufactured logs. Peloruses, and adjusted compasses. So skilled was he in the art of nautical instruments that he became known as the first man in America who could adjust a compass aboard an iron ship. Over the years.
