Mass. had its origination in 1905 when it started the manufacture of mariners(spirit) compasses in a small way without the aid of power other than that which one could produce through his own efforts upon a foot treadle. This compass is in it's original box. I am uncertain of the material, it has a very hard plastic feel to it. The lid is 4 1/2 inches in diameter and without the lid it is 4 inches with 3 inches in height. It appears to be brass, I am not an expert, but am happy to answer any questions through email. All is in tact. The box appears to have a small repair, but the compass and all are very nice. This is a good find. If you are lost and need nautical direction, then you have found the right item! ANTIQUE ES RITCHIE COMPASS BOSTON WITH BOX
This is a ES Ritchie compass in a box. The compass was probably made in the late 1800's. Has dates ranging from 1868 to 1876(pictured) Not sure what they are for. Looks like someone tried to restore it previously. It has some blemishes and is not perfect but is in decent shape. Compass seems to function normally but I am no expert. I do not know if the box is original but appears to have age. Sold as is with no warrnaty expressed or implied.

It's historic maker makes it an interesting conversation piece in any setting. Originally. It would have been mounted in a box, or housed in a binnacle which may have been used in whaleboat, dory, or fishing boat of the 1850's. COMPASS' MAKER: Baker was born in New Bedford. MA in 1792. Baker is listed in Webster's and also in the Whale-man's list which shows he was a dealer in nautical instruments. Later, he worked with a partner, Thomas Hooper at 54 Ann St. in Boston, MA. D. Baker Boston within The Axial Balance Compass THE COMPASS is an old paper card compass. It is solidly made and housed in a glazed. Heavy brass case with weight at the bottom. The engraved paper card ... morehas an unusual geometric design as its North pointer over a circular cartouche. The card is divided into eight Cardinal Points, each of 45 degrees, and then into 1/8 and 1/16th points. Each point subtends an arc of 11 1/4 degrees comprising in total 360 degrees of the compass. It rests on a brass pivot with a cap. The compass's card drags and is slow to register the heading because of its age, otherwise it is in fine condition. Kelvin& Wilfrid O. White Co. Cased Ship's Compass in pretty good and appears to be original condition. I am not an expert with compasses but it seems to work well. The case is dove-tailed at all its joints and it is in good condition. There are some minor scratches and wear on the wood case due to age. There is a piece at the bottom that has cracked or came unglued. You can see in the last picture. Both screws that hold the compass are original and identical. The hinges on both sides are also original and good. The black paint in the compass is a little chipped/worn off in some areas but. The metal, glass and compass inside are good. This one seems an early one, I wasn't able to find information on dating by serial number but. This one shows serial number 3567 in two places and it seems a low number so it might be from early on ... more1920 or so. Measurements: Compass: 5-7/8" in diameter without the ring holding it. Box: 8" long by 8" wide by 5-1/4" tall. Weight: approximately 6 lbs A little history about the maker: Wilfrid O. White of Williamstown Australia married the daughter of American George W. Eldridge who published the first Eldridge Tide and Pilot book. Wilfrid came from a family of shipbuilders and he was fascinated with navigation. He took an opportunity to study with Lord Kelvin in the UK and when he returned to Boston in 1918 where he opened up a small nautical instrument dealership. Kelvin and Wilfrid O. White Co. Was located on historic State Street in Boston, a couple of blocks from the busy waterfront. He offered sextants, compasses in large binnacles, chronometers, binoculars, taffrail logs, barometers, and charts for all oceans. ES Ritchie Boston Cased Gimbaled Compass with Great Lakes Provenance dated 1881
This is a gimbaled liquid compass by E. S. Ritchie of Boston. No. 11485. According to the Ritchie archives this compass was sent to Dunham& Hoit, Ship Chandlers and Sail Makers of South Water Street, Chicago on July 27th 1881. I can provide the buyer the scan of the order book that Ritchie sent me. I can also provide a scan of an advertisement for Dunham& Hoit(shown in the last photograph) They were located on the Chicago river just at the bend where the North and South branches meet just north of Lake Street. Today that is Wacker Drive. However, I found this piece in Cleveland even though I'm in Chicago. The dial is approx. 7 inches diameter(8 3/4 inches including the frame) And the bowl is 5 inches high. The brass frame has patent dates of 1863- 1876. The mahogany case measures 12 x 12 x 8 inches and is black painted inside. ... moreThere is some separation and an age split to the lid, but nothing that can't be easily repaired. Due to the weight I will double box both pieces and I've had to estimate the size of the package. If I'm badly off I will refund the difference.

Offered is an old MS Richie Boston gimbaled binnacle ship compass. Around the brass rim is printed MS Richie Boston. Patented Sept 9, 1803, the numbers 6013 and then the dates April 7, 1863, May 12, 1869 followed by the date July 19, 1870. I think MS Richie Boston is still in business. Please look at the pictures carefully. There is some discoloration on the inside of the glass face, the gimbals are slightly rusty, and there are scratches on the underside. Recently picked it up at an auction. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. Not sure what year the compass was made as cannot find a serial number listing online. But would guess it was made in the early 1920s to 1940s. The compass body certainly shows wear and tear, but still shows nicely. Did not clean the compass, just wiped it down. The glass is intact on the piece, no cracking or blistering. Serial number on the compass is 61529. The compass was made by Star Pathfinder of Boston. MA per the compass dial. The body and bowl on this compass are made of some sort of painted metal. The compass is 5" across at the hinges where it sits ... morein a beautiful mahogany case/binnacle. The case/binnacle box is just beautiful. Still has the top too which is rare with boxed compasses. The top of the case/binnacle is made of mahogany. The bottom of the wood case has a split in the wood across the entire bottom. The top should have 3 dowel pins. One is there and pulls down. Another is there and is fixed in box. But does not hang down. 3rd one is not there. The two brass latches and eye screws are there to secure the compass top to the base. The case is 4-3/8" tall, by 6-3/16" across each side. The compass is 6-1/8" across at outside of ring around the glass and is 4-1/8" across to the compass ring. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. RARE ANTIQUE 1875 E.S RITCHIE BOSTON SHIP COMPASS ORIGINAL BOX NO RESERVE NEAT!
This is an incredible rare find. Up for auction is a E.S. Ritchie Maritime ship Compass marked 1875 Boston U.S.A in the original wood box. For its age the condition is incredible. The compass functions properly and swivels and is mounted to the original wood case. It has a serial number of 9544 and the last pat date is listed as Aug 17th 1875. The first pat date is 1862. The compass itself is marked in Black and White highlights and all writing is sharp and easy to read. The compass itself is 8.5 x 8.5. And sits inside of a brass circle that swivels which is 10.5 x 10.5. Both circles sit inside the box which measures 11x11, and is 6.5 inches tall. The box is excellent for its age. There are a few scratches and areas where it has faded some but the majority has nice dark wood with no cracks. one of the lower corners has a small separation ... moreor gap between the two connecting woods of the box which is approximately 1/16 inches. The box holds and protects the compass well. This would be an incredible addition to a nautical, maritime or compass collection. Being from a specific ship makes it incredibly unique. Maritime Antique Ship's Compass, Baker Company, Melrose, Boston MA circa 1873
MASSACHUSETTS/ MARITIME HISTORY- BOSTON MA. Baker Compass Company Est. 1873. It was built around the turn of the century and speculation is this compass may have been used for the lifeboat on a larger fishing vessel. It has a black painted brass face that pivots on a brass gimball. The compass is oil filled and rests inside a wooden dovetailed box. It wears it's history in the patina and markings of all the years it's been around. The glass face is extremely clear, a very small blemish in the center of the face is virtually unnoticeable, any fogginess is in the photos only. Directly in front of the Helmsman who was responsible for maintaining the ship’s course. This binnacle was built by the U.S. maker“KELVIN& WILFRID O. WHITE based in Boston. It features, a solid mahogany body/base, brass compass hood, two 7” compensating globes, internal brass finders bar tube(iron bar missing) And 110 volt lighting. The hood has two viewing windows(small mouths) One in the top(4 ¾” and one in front(5¼” The unit measures 48” tall. 12” wide(wood body) 17”x 17” base, and two globe arms(34” from tip to tip) The original maker’s brass plaque is still affixed to the wood front and reads: KELVIN& WILFRID O. WHITE" BOSTON" ... more5725" NEW YORK" The hinged front door has the original lock(replacement key) which allows access to the many racks holding the magnets necessary to adjust for magnetic deviations(five are still in place) The original light dimming assembly has been removed, but the brass light shield base plate is still in place. It appears that the on/off toggle switch and 14’ power cord are replacements. Also, the map tube originally attach to the wood back is missing. The installed functional compass shows the following information: the glass retaining ring is stamped"KELVIN WHITE BOSTON" F2450" the gimbaled ring is stamped“2096” and the compass card art work reads“KELVIN& WILFRID O. WHITE CO. BOSTON& NEW YORK. U.S.A. The inside of this liquid compass is like new, which makes me believe it has never been filled with liquid. The glass window has a ½” star shaped superficial blemish, which looks like a very hot small object landed on the surface. Binnacles of this quality. The outside of the gimbals measures approximately 5 1/4 inches across. The box is 6 by 6 by 5 1/4 with the lid on. This is a very nice compass in as found condition. The lid shows an old repaired split and the instrument shows allover surface wear and some finish corrosion. It is otherwise in good working condition. For sale is a Key West estate find. This is a 1905 marine Star brand compass. Style# 39020. It is in its original box and is in very good condition. The compass is gimbled and retains its floating liquid. What is really cool about this one is that it has its provenance written on the inside of the lid. The Star Co. was located in Boston MA. This was the first year(1905) they started producing these compasses. The compass itself is brass and steel. The box is oak and is all original and in very good condition. It measures 6 5/8 x 6 5/8 x 4 5/8 inches. This is a great find for any nautical collector. I ship fully insured.
