Description This is a U. S. Navy WWII Tripod Mounted Sperry Repeater Gyro Compass. The back is marked Mark VI. Mod. O. SER 19914. The compass face has a diameter of 9 3/4" and is made of weighted brass and bronze. It is marked"SPERRY GYROSCOPE COMPANY. INC.NEW YORK" and"GYRO-COMPASS REPEATER/PATENTED MAR. 4, 1919" The compass is also marked Mark XV MOD. O. It weighs about 35 pounds. There is a brass screen cover which I do not believe to be original to this piece and was manufactured by Microtecnica. Torino(dented on left side) It has a double slot which can be opened to reveal the compass or closed completely. It came from the estate of an avid maritime and nautical antiques collector. This auction includes one v intage Ship's Compass with chrome body made in USA c.1960's. Base has both horizontal and vertical sway so the compass stays level when at sea. Excellent working order. A World War 2 period. Ships Gyro Repeater Compass on Pelorus stand by Sperry Corporation of New York, about 1944. Mk 15 Mod 0, stands 53 ins tall, base diameter is 14 ins, column diameter is 6 ins and the actual Compass diameter is 9 3/4 ins. The whole unit is very heavy and made of solid Bronze and Brass. Would benefit from a good buffing. The original name tag on the stand is missing, leaving remnants of 4 studs( see photo) The Compass cover has dents and is missing one knob. While all the internals are there( gyro, wiring and switchgear in secondary column) it is not known if this still works and cannot be tested as the multi strand wire coming from the middle column switchgear has no plug or identifying tags. So for this reason is' sold as seen not working' The side knob on the Compass body does turn the dial to zero it. Much ... moreto awkward and heavy to ship. USS Tulare(AKA-112/LKA-112) was a Tulare class attack cargo ship in the United States Navy. She was named after a county in California. The ship was laid as a Type C4-S-A1 ship down under a Maritime Administration contract as Evergreen Mariner(MA hull 32) on 16 February 1953. At San Francisco, by the Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corp. launched on 22 December 1953; sponsored by Miss Carolyn Knight, daughter of the governor of California, Goodwin J. Knight; renamed Tulare and designated as AKA-112 on 10 June 1954. The ship was then converted to an attack cargo ship by her building yard; turned over to the Navy on 10 January 1956; and commissioned on 12 January 1956, Capt. Donald W. Todd in command. Here is a very old Gyro Compass Repeater Mark XV MOD. 0 made by Sperry Gyroscope Company NY. It was patented in March 1919. I believe the material is brass and bronze from the research I have done it. I cant say if it was used or not but overall it looks like it is in very good shape. Everything is intact with normal paint chips over time which can be seen in pics. It weighs almost 40lbs.

Brown Gyro Compass. Very little is known but I had this Nautical piece in my business for over 35 years. Very nice condition brass compass. Box in good shape with scratches from age and 2 small holes in back that were used to mount to a wall for display. One side of the clear rectangular glass in the middle is chipped along the edges, other 2 tinted glass pieces have scratches from age/wear but overall the instrument is in good condition. Doing research on the web it appears that this was made by the SG Brown company in England and possibly dates to use in WW II. This large. Fabulous nautical/ maritime piece is a very heavy, 25-pound, solid bronze piece. It came straight out of the warehouse of a shipwrecker of Navy and other maritime ships. It is in excellent condition, with no issues. It was manufactured by Sperry Maritime Systems/ Sperry-Rand Corporation. These Gyrocompass Repeaters, originally patented in 1919, were installed on Navy and other ocean-going vessels as a navigation piece, and were more accurate in their determination of"true north" as they were unaffected by the steel parts of the ship. They were widely used by the US Navy in WWI. This piece has a thick glass covered face over the compass repeater. Classic maritime aqua enamel coating on the back side. The compass display face is 9 1/2" diameter. Front to back it measures 9" deep. The heavy cast bracket is included ... morefor mounting it. You could display it on a 1 1/4" heavy pipe stand. The shipwrecker indicates this piece was taken off from the Pioneer Contractor, which was a 1963 build US naval cargo ship(photo attached) A great piece for display with your nautical/ maritime decor.
