Singing in the sunshine

11th February 16,    morning            mid section mostly sunny,   2-7°c,  1004 mb,  S 4-SSW 4 mph

Plenty of bird song this morning in the sunshine, including a solitary stock dove in the old and defunct reedbed. Little grebe numbers seem to be falling off ( although I haven't checked the north end for a while ). Just three today, two winter plumaged birds by Meccano Bridge early on and on the return journey a w/p still at Meccano, a bird showing signs of summer plumage by the Tennis Courts and the other w/p bird now by Newbridge Wharf.

Parakeet the only highlight today

28th December 15           morning               mid section cloudy,  10-11°c,   1014 mb,  SW 14

A brighter day than of late ( that's the weather not the birding ) and a good start with three little grebe from the old bridge on Meadow View and a robin singing, but the star was a calling parakeet in the large trees by the corner, it eventually flew and perched in the canal side trees of Station Paddock and then back again. It was still calling when I left for the Paddocks where I had it again, it left the area to the south. Two male pied wagtail by the Wetland pool and two redwing which flew from the Barleyfield Annex to Lower Alders and a female great spotted woodpecker flew to the trees between the prefabs and canal before going over Compton Rough to the railway trees were as good as it got today.

The Wetland mallard's have 9 chicks 22nd May 15      morning          mid section Cloudy,mild , 11-16°c, 1025mb, SW 7-2mph

Much of a muchness today, the only note-worthy news is the Wetland mallard's were found to have 9 chicks. Most birds tend to lay one egg a day and as far as I know this includes ducks, I first found the female on a nest 21st April so she must have just started brooding  ( mallards start brooding when they have laid the last egg ) ,because if they incubate for 28 days on average ( do the maths ) the young should be out & about just about now,so that ok then.
Don't all dash down with your loaf of bread though,if you must? take mealworms or something more nutritious from the pet shop. Have a good bank holiday weekend.

WHINCHAT on Chat Clump 20th May 15             morning                  mid section blustery occ showers,  8-11°c,  1015mb,  WNW 12-15mph,

The morning started quietly with no sign of grey wagtails on a short shufty, Barleyfield dead, until I put my bins on the Chat Clump before I disappeared into the Wetlands, as usual. A small dumpy two-tone bird was sat there? it was either a whinchat or stonechat ( guess why it's called Chat Clump?). I moved to a better view point and after a while it showed again WHINCHAT a female. A species which used to turn up annually in small numbers until recently but has (along with other species) become quite scarce.

New life appearing 16th May 15              mid morning                    mid section mostly sunny,  10-11°c,  1022mb,  NW 11-13mph

Mallard was the first to bring new avian life to the valley this year as usual, a brood of 11 chicks were found on 26th April being the first. Since then several mallard broods have been seen along the canal, about the same time long tail tits were noted taking food to a nest near the Graisley brook culvert and the grey wagtail was first found sitting on eggs. Many species have since been seen carrying food. The long tail tits at Graisley culvert seem to have fledged and were found near by on 8th May. Grey wagtails were first found feeding young on 7th May and if all goes well should fledge towards the end of this coming week, there filling the nest to over-flowing at the moment.

Another quiet day 15 May 15              mid morning              mid section O/cast mostly,  10°c,  1022mb,    NE 3 - SW 8mph

The thrushes were more vocal today but as is to be expected there is less warblers singing as they have breeding duties to perform. No sign of the garden warbler this morning, but whitethroat  numbers are back to usual.

Local hirundines UTB

10 May 15                    morning                        mid section

partly cloudy,  10-15°c,  1021mb   S 11-13mph

Ok the more astute of you will have picked up on the poetic licence. For those non birders out there, hirundines are the swallow and martin family, which doesn't strictly include the swifts.(but it's my post so I can). Also sand martin are very scarce here in the mid section and I haven't had one today but for the first time this year swift, swallow and house martin are (under the belt)

The swifts are back 8th May 15           mid morning       mid section high cloud, mild, 11-13°c,  1014mb,  SSE 7-13mph

Yes a week late but the swifts are back, Dave had one in the southern section on monday but the 4 over Tettenhall Ridge this morning are my first locals this year. The garden warbler continues to sing from the Barleyfield Annex along with plenty of other warblers and resident birds but  I suspect our last hope of a willow warbler disappeared with tuesday's bird. Is the grey wagtail found on the Wetland pool the same male as the Smestow Br bird? ( I suspect it is ).

Hope the valley is good enough for the latest willow warbler 5th May 15        mid morning         mid section

Blustery but mild after o/night rain,occ drizzle with gusts 40mph,  12°c,  984-990mb,  SW 20-40mph.

Another willow warbler was the only change today. Most birds are keeping their heads down in the strong winds but a few brave individuals still managed a note or two to reveal their presence.
All our willow warblers this spring proved to be just passing through so let hope this one sticks and continues to deliver its ( sound of  summer ) song.

Its turned out nice again

3rd May 15           late morning             mid section

cloudy & mild after rain,  11-16°c,  992mb,  S 8 - SW 15

A visit to Belvide Res was on the cards when we woke up to a rainy morning and southerly winds.     ( just the weather for goodies to turn up) ( as it happens black terns are now everywhere ) Yes including Belvide, but it started to clear about 9 o'clock so it was back on for the valley. You never know something could drop in, as Ian said recently "don't get fooled again" but I did.
The best I could muster was another garden warbler ( or has it been hiding ) in the same bushes as the one on 23rd April. Nothing new and the regulars down on numbers too. Though I didn't have time to cover the southern section of the canal including Compton Lock, where we usually get good numbers.

The May blossom is appearing but it feels like March 2nd May 15             mid morning              mid section Overcast, cold,  5-7°c,  1011mb,  ESE  13mph

The cold easterly is unpleasant but it may have gifted us a few passing migrants.Blackcaps and whitethroats are more evident and a flyover lapwing is new for the year in this part of the valley.

A new month a new bird for the year 1st May 15            mid morning     mid section mostly sunny,  5-9°c,  1011mb,  ENE 13-19mph
The highlight today was a singing lesser whitethroat in the blackthorn on the lower western border
of the Barleyfield along with 2 common whitethroat near by both singing, also the now resident
whitethroat in the top SW corner. Otherwise a disappointingly quiet morning, maybe the cold NE wind is not to their liking.
