Look back on 2023

In an effort to boost my enthusiasm for the hobby I did a bit of a look back over this year. Overall on the painting front, it is the best year I have had since keeping records and by some margin. 2,581 against a previous best of 1,454 in 2013. Those 80 figure Epic battalions have certainly helped as can be seen in the breakdown, with 15mm the standout and a welcome return to probably my favourite scale.

6mm foot - 20

6mm vehicles - 12

10mm scenic/building - 12

15mm artillery - 9

15mm foot - 1947

15mm vehicles - 20

15mm mounted - 253

15mm scenic/building - 30

28mm artillery - 3

28mm foot - 216

28mm monster - 8

28mm mounted - 9

28mm scenic/building - 33

28mm vehicles - 9

So what did I paint? well it can be easily broken down into 3 distinct periods. At the start of the year I was well into my 28mm Back of Beyond and Russian Civil war collections, with a couple of big games at the club. I also interspersed these with the first 15mm in a Trojan War collection inspired by the figures from Museum miniatures. Then in July I switched over to 15mm 40k figures, courtesy of Dave and his 3d printer.

From August though my attention moved onto the English Civil War and Warlords epic scale figures. I've spent the last 4 months of the year exclusively painting up this collection. I also then had the idea of a display game at my local show for next year, The Marston Moor project was born and I'm about 75% of the way through the required figures.

So what are the plans for 2024, well more English Civil war, in particular the Scots Covenanters to Complete Marston Moor. I also have a hankering on some smaller scale WW2, Mitch has the O Group rules, they look a decent set and I have ideas for battles in North Africa. After that I have no plans, nothing new has grabbed my attention, I'll probably concentrate on expanding existing collections such as the Trojan War. No doubt attendance at one of the shows will inspire me to do something new. In the meantime I just need to get Simon's figures off the painting table and get back to stuff for me.

No doubt this will be the last post of the year, so wishing you all a Happy New Year and all the best for 2024.

2017 a review

First off I just want to thank everyone who follows this blog. Your comments are appreciated so thanks again and I hope 2018 is a good year for you all.

So onto the review. On the painting front this has been a very productive year. At about the end of July I had high hopes of painting well over 1000 figures but found my painting time much reduce when the family increased with a new dog. Still 990 figures painted is a good total, broken down as follows

12 x 15mm artillery
528 x 15mm infantry
315 x 15mm mounted
1 x 28mm artillery
125 x 28mm infantry
9 x 28mm mounted

So what did I actually paint? The bulk of the year has been spent on the Great Northern War. I added some extra troops to the Swedes and completed both a Danish and Polish army.

For other periods I painted up some figures for Rogue Stars as well as some Dwarves for my old warhammer army. I then moved on to some 28mm Napoleonic, putting together an Austrian force for Sharp Practice.

On the gaming front there have been a couple of notable games. The main one being a re fight of Klissow. Definitely one crossed off the bucket list. There were also the final 2 battles of a campaign against Mick for the WSS which brought it to a close and victory to me. Finally there were a couple of games of warhammer 3rd edition, very nostalgic and gave me a real buzz.

Finally this year I seem to have settled on a set of rules for the Napoleonic wars, General d'armee. I really like  these rules and I'm looking forward to getting some more games in next year.

Looking ahead for next year I have a planned GNW campaign against Mick, Still a couple of units to finish off. I am also looking to put together a Russian force for the GNW. I see this as more long term,  I'll just keep adding a few units every now and then and see what I end up with. I also quite fancy a change from horse and musket back to ancients with some 15mm Romans for Caesar's conquest of Gaul. No doubt I will get side tracked by something else.

Have a great New Year everyone.

2016 Review

First off I'd just like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope 2017 is a good one. I would like to thank every one who follows the blog and for their comments, much appreciated. Now as is obligatory these days I thought I'd review my progress for 2016. At the start of the year this was my aim

"For 2016 I don't  have any firm goals yet. I would like to finish my WSS and FPW collections but after that a bit of a loose end. No doubt something shine will catch my eye".

Can't believe I left it that open. However it did leave a bit of freedom this year. Things kicked off in February after the York show when I committed to the AWI in 28mm. Managed to get a fair bit done and a useable force for club games. I do have some more militia to paint up to add to the Continentals.

Next up was a quick return to my 15mm ACW collection. This was inspired by a refight of the battle of Fredericksburg and the need for some extra brigades and Artillery. All that I have left in the unpainted pile is a handful of reb cavalry.

The rest of the year has been spent on the Great Northern War. Initially inspired by an ongoing campaign with Mick and the need for extra troops saw this spiral into my main project. After over 20 years I finally finished the Saxons, even adding in the Russian Auxiliary Corps,  Polish cavalry and finally the Swedes. 2017 should see the addition of more Swedes as well as the Danes and extra Polish cavalry. This period also encouraged me to adapt the current he's based rules I use for the horse and musket period. So far so good and even resulted in a re fight of Klissow.

On the painting front it has been rather productive, approx 1000 figures completed.

2016 PAINTING TOTALS

15mm Artillery - 24
15mm Foot figures - 498
15mm Mounted figures - 230
28mm Artillery -2
28mm Foot figures - 224
28mm Mounted figures - 8

2017 will see the continuation of the WSS campaign against Mick. We are currently 3 games in. No doubt it will also help with the enthusiasm to paint the figures for both the GNW and WSS. I do have a hankering to paint up a few individual figures for games like Rogue Stars and Frostgrave, more for variety and my sanity.

Flags and more Hessians

To try and finish of my Hessian's I decided to make a small purchase with maverick-models as a number of bloggers had recommended them for the quality of their flags. So with a small purchase made I was surprised to receive an email the following day asking if I wanted the standard 15mm scale flags or re sized to fit the flag poles of the figures I was using. As it happened the standard size is fine but it is nice to know that re sizing can be done, particularly thinking of those 15mm ranges which border on 18mm nowadays. So a big thumbs up on that, especially when you are only paying 50p a flag.

Next to delivery, the website say to give 21 days for delivery, so imagine my surprise when they turned up only a week later. This may have been to do with the small size of the order, but still excellent service. So to the flags themselves, well I was impressed. I did take a picture but it didn't come out very well. However after a few minutes trimming I had them added to my Hessian Horse units.

The flags are from left to right, Erbprinz, Erbach, Leibregiment and Aurochs. Now luckily I have some black and white line drawings of these flags with colours in German and confirm that they were spot on for accuracy. So overall i am very happy with these and will be making future purchases. If you haven't already done so I would check out his site.

The second part of this post is for my completed Dragoon regiment - Aurochs. This brings my Hessian horse to 4 regiments. The nice thing with these is they fit in well with my British troops fighting at Blenheim.

I have also been slowly updating my WSS/GNW page with better photos showcasing each of my contingents.
