This invention relates to sanitary napkins and particularly to the provision of means for supporting devices of this class in connection with the body of the wearer; and the fa object of the invention is to provide a supporting means for devices of the class specified which includes means for detachably supporting one end portion of the napkin with the body encircling band or strap member; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified Wherein the supporting means including the body encircling band may constitute a permanent part of the napkin and be distributed therewith or wherein the body encircling band may be detached from the napkin and especially in the provision of a device wh ch is simple and economical in construction and or" such low manufacturing cost and retail selling price as to justify the disposal or" the entire device; a still further object being to provide a devlce ofthe class specified which will lie flatly upon the body of the wearer, thus producing a neat and finished appearance; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are-desi nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of device which I employ showing the parts in position for use. In Fig. 1 oi the drawing, I have shown one of my improved devices involving a napkin proper 5, preferably composed of cheese cloth or any other similar inexpensive, absorbent material, tral padded portion 6, the padding of which may constitute any desired material such as paper or paper cotton or other fibrous material of an absorbent nature. To the end portions of the napkin which constitutes'os an elongated and comparatively narrow body are secured tab portions 7 and 8 preferably of a strong but inexpensive material.

In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a body encircling band or strap member 9 is secured to one of the tabs, the pad 8 in the construction shown, by stitchings 10 or in any other desired manner, and the tab 7 is adapted to be detachably coupled with an oppositely disposed portion of the band or strap member 9 by looping the free end portion 7 of the tab 7 over and around the strap 9 and securing the end 7 to the remainder of the tab, which is accomplished in the construction shown by engaging the button hole 11 on the end portion 7* with a button 12 on the pad proper.

The band or strap member 9 may be of any desired construction, that is to say, it may be continuous with the provision of an elastic insert as disclosed in Fig. 3 or have coupling means as seen in Fig. 2 for the free end portions thereof, or said strap member may have extended ends adapted to be tied together as seen at 13 in Fig. 1. It will be understood at this time, that any one of the several forms of strap members shown, may be incorporated, in the other modified struc-' tures of the napkin proper.v

In Fig. 2 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification wherein the end portion 7 of the tab 7 has a button hole 14 adapted to engage a button 15 secured to the strap member 9. In this figure, instead of securing the strap member to the pad 8 as in-Fig.-

and having a cen-"60 1, the tab 8 is in the form of a loop in which the strap member 9 is free to pass, thus permitting the detachment of the strap member from the remainder of the device. In this construction, one end of the strap member 9" is provided with a button 16 and the other end with a button hole 17 for coupling the ends of the strap member together to secure the same about the body of the wearer.

In Fig. 3 of the drawing, a strap member 9 is-subst-ituted for the strap members 9 and 9' and is preferably of an annular or continuous band having one or more elastic inserts 18 to facilitate the mounting of the strap member 9 upon the body of the wearer. In Fig. 3, I have shown a pad 19 which is substituted for the tab 7 at one end of the v napkin 5, and this pad is provided adjacent its attached end with transversely spaced apertures 20 and 21. The end portion of the strap member is reduced as seen at 22, and mounted in said reduced end is a relatively stiff member 23, the ends of which project to permit the passage of the projecting ends of said member through the respective apertures 20 and 21, the member being capable of flexing in this operation. It is preferred that the member 23 be composed of celluloid, rubber, bone or metal, but my invention is not necessarily limited in this re- 7 spect.

form a V- haped end portion In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, I have shown another form of tab 24 which is stitched or otherwise secured to one end of the napkin 5, and this tab is made from an elongated strip of comparatively strong but inexpensive material which is folded centrally to forma strip of two ply thickness, the separate walls being designated at 24 and 24", note Fig. 5, and the free edges of said walls are hemmed or flanged inwardly as seen at 25. In forming this strip after the walls 24 and 24 have been arranged one upon the other, the central portion of the strip is folded in a triangular fashion to 26 and to arrange the folded sides of the strip adjacent the flanged ends 25 on the outer sides of the resulting body as clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the drawing. 7

The strip folded as above described to form the tab 24, is stitched transversely as seen at 27 to secure the triangular and V-shaped end portions together, and is also stitched at spaced intervals as seen at 28 to join the adj acent edges of said strip and to form between the stitchings 28, apertures 29, arranged centrally of the tab 24 and adapted to receive a relatively rigid coupling member 30 at the free end ofa strap 31 attached to the inner end of the tab 24 by the stitchings 32 employed to secure the pad to the napkin 5.

In the use of the device shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the free end of the tab'24 is looped around the waist encircling strap member meaaee 9 which may be similar to either of the strap members disclosed in the other figures, and the member 30 is passed through one of the apertures 29, said member cooperating with one of the stitchings 28, and serving to secure the tab and said end of the napkin against displacement from the band 9 as will be apparent. The spaced apertures 29 provide for the adjustment of the pad end of the device as will be apparent.

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that one end portion of the napkin may be detached from the body encircling band in the several forms of construction shown in the use of the device, and the other end portion of the napkin may be fixed permanently to the band or detachably and adjustably secured thereto. While I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will be understood that one end of the napkin and with which the other end of the napkin is detachably coupled when said band is in operative position, said last named end of the napkin being folded around the band and detachably attached thereto in a relatively fixed position when said band is in operative position.

2. The combination with a sanitary napkm, of means constituting a part of the structure thereof for supporting the same upon the body of the wearer, said means comprising a loop formed at one end of the napkin and a body encircling band arranged in said loop to support said end of the napkin, the ends of said band being coupled together to support the same upon the body of the wearer and the other end of the napkin being detachably coupled with said band when in operative position, the attachment of the last named end of the napkin to said band in volving an attaching device supported on said band and adapted to engage said end of the napkin, and said coupling means involving a band of relatively strong material looped around said band.
