Description
L. G. WARREN.
GARTER.
APPLICATION FILED mac. 28. 1920.
Patented June 21, 1921.
INVENTOH LII-LIAN G. IA APEEN WITNESSES er v ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LILLIAN Gr. WARREN, OF WESTWOOD, CALIFORNIA.
GAB/TEE.
Application filed December 28, 1920. Serial No. 433,620.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, LILLIAN G. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VVestwood, in the county of Lassen and State of California, have invented a he and Improved Garter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel and its object is to provide a new and improved garter arranged to hold the hose securely in place without danger of unduly binding on the users leg or interfering with the blood circulation.
Another object is to permit of conveniently and quickly placing the garter in position on or removing it from the leg.
Another object is to prevent the garter band from curling or crumpling.
Another object is to provide convenient means for safely storing money, jewelry or other valuable articles.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specificaly pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the acompan-ying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved garter;
Fig. 2 is a face view of the rear members in detached position relative to the leg band;
Fig. 3 is a rear face view of the purse; and i Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of the leg band.
The garter in its general construction comprises a leg band 10, one end of which is connected by a link 11 with one end of a tape 12 connected at its other end by a link 13 with an attaching member 14, preferably of sateen, and provided with, at least, two spaced fastening members 15 and 16, either of which is adapted to engage a fastening member 17 on the free end of the leg band 10. The fastening members 15, 16 and 17 are preferably in the form of snap fasteners. The leg band 10 is formed of two pieces of elastic webbing 20 and 21 between which is arranged a padding 22 formed of a gathered inelastic band, the webbings 20 and 21 and the padding 22 being fastened together by stitches 23 during the time the elastic webbings 20 and 21 and the padding 22 are held in stretched condition. Thus after the sewing is completed and the parts are released from stretched position the webbings 20 and 21 return by their own elasticity to non-stretched position and in doing so gather the padding 22.
In using the garter the leg band 10 is extended around the front and sides of the leg Wllll" the inelastic members 12 and 14 extend at the rear of the leg and one of the fastening members 15 or 16 is engaged with the fastening member 17 to close the garter. In practice, the garter can be worn either di rectly above or below the knee over the hose and by making the rear members 12 and 14 of inelastic material they are not liable to press unduly and bind on the cords and muscles of the leg and do not interfere with the circulation of the blood. By providing a leg band 10 which is both elastic and padded a firm contact is had with thehose to hold the same securely in position on the leg. It is understood that either the fastoning member 15 or 16 is engaged with the fastening member 17 according to the size of the wearers leg to hold the leg band 10 somewhat under tension. Thus for a small sized leg use is made of the fastening members 15 and 17 and for a leg of larger circumference the fastening members 16 and 17 are used.
In practice garters of three different lengths I of leg band 10 will be sufiicient to fit the different sized legs especially as each garter has, at least, two fastening members 15 and 16 to provide intermediate adjustment as above mentioned. It will be noticed that the leg band 10 constructed in the manner described is not liable to curl or crumple ow ing to the padding 22 being interposed between the elastic webings 20 and 21.
A purse 30 may be attached to the garter and for this purpose the purse is provided at the back with loops 31 through which the leg band 10 passes to support the purse, as shown in Fig. 1. On the back of the purse 30 is arranged an attaching member 32 adapted to engage a companion member 33 secured to the outer face of the webbing 20 (see Fig. 1) to hold the purse against sidewise movement on the leg band 10. The fastening members 32 and 33' are preferably of the snap fastener type.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent zl. A garter, comprising an elastic padded meaeee ding being formed of a gathered piece of inelastic textile material, an inelastic tape, a link connecting one end of the said tape with one end of the said leg band, an inelastic attaching member, a link connecting one end of the attaching: member with the other end of the said tape, and fastening members, of which at least two are arranged on the said attaching member and one is lo- 20 cated on the free end of the said leg band.
