Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately detect the absolute position of a code plate divided into a plurality of sections, by providing the code plate with address patterns for indicating the absolute position of each section, mark patterns for indicating the sections and lattice patterns.
CONSTITUTION: A line sensor (b) comprises light receivers which have a sensitivity independently of one another. An encoder plate (a), which is moved relatively to the line sensor (b), comprises characteristic patterns 13 for indicating the beginning of sections, block reference position marks 14, lattice patterns 16 and section address codes 20. Light transmitted through the code plate (a) is received by the line sensor (b). The absolute position of the code plate (a) is roughly read from section beginning position information and section absolute position information which is the time-series output of the line sensor (b). An output signal from the lattice patterns 16 is inserted to accurately read the absolute position of the code plate.
