Abstract

Cellulosic materials, e.g. cotton gauze and viscose rayon, are stabilized against yellowing when subjecting them to storage, hot air drying or sterilization employing steam or high energy radiation from an electron beam, Roentgen ray machine or cobalt 60, by treating them with a combination of treating agents including citrate ions, calcium ions and nitrate ions, the treating agents being applied to the cellulosic materials in amounts sufficient to improve the stability of the cellulosic materials against discolouration. The cellulosic materials may be treated with a combination of treating agents in aqueous solution including citrate ions, calcium ions and nitrate ions, each in a concentration of 0.001-1% by weight of aqueous solution, the preferred treating agents being calcium nitrate and citric acid.
