Abstract

Cellulosic materials, e.g. cotton and viscose rayon, are bleached by treating them with an aqueous solution containing chlorite ions and monomethylol dimethyl hydantoin or a dimethyl hydantoin-formaldehyde resin. The bleaching solution preferably contains less than 1% of monomethylol dimethyl hydantoin or the dimethyl hydantoin-formaldehyde resin, calculated on a weight by volume basis, and the treatment is preferably carried out at the boiling point of the solution. The Provisional Specification refers to the bleaching of cellulosic materials with a chlorite bleaching solution in the presence of an agent which releases formaldehyde slowly in the presence of chlorite ions at a pH in the range of 6,5-8, the agent being stable in aqueous solution and substantially free from unbound formaldehyde. Specification 561,022 is referred to.
