Abstract

Durable finishes, e.g. crease-resistant and mechanical finishes, are obtained on fabrics of natural or regenerated cellulose by treating them with an aqueous solution of an acid-catalysable thermosetting formaldehyde-containing resinous material, the solution also containing at least 0.36 per cent by weight of hydrogen peroxide, and then drying and heating the treated fabric to insolubilize the resin, the amount of free formaldehyde and of hydrogen peroxide being such as to form acid in an amount sufficient to produce a pH on the cured fabric in the unwashed state of 3 to 6.8. The free formaldehyde may be liberated from the resinous material when in solution, and if inadequate, an additional amount of formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or formaldehyde-yielding substance may be added to the solution. In examples, cotton, linen and viscose rayon fabrics are impregnated with aqueous solutions containing, in addition to formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide, the following resin-forming ingredients: dimethylol melamine, dimethyl trimethylol melamine, dimethylol urea, dimethylol ethylene urea, dicyandiamideformaldehyde resin, polyvinyl alcohol and potato starch, some solutions also containing sulphonated castor oil or s-di[1-(2-palmitamidoethyl)]urea monoacetate. In some cases glazing, embossing or calendering effects are applied prior to the final heat treatment.
