Abstract
860,257. Selective control systems. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. May 2, 1957 [March 1, 1956], No. 6403/56. Class 40 (1). A device for positioning a shaft consists of a contact drum rotating with the shaft and, engaging the drum, a series of spaced contacts 7-12, Fig. 1, one of which is energized by closure of an associated switch 13-18, a motor 23 in circuit with the switches serving to drive the drum until the circuit is interrupted by the alignment of an insulating segment 6 with the energized contact. When the motor is energized, a relay 25 connected in parallel with it, holds a locking-bolt 27 withdrawn but as soon as the selected position is reached, the bolt is allowed to project under the action of spring 31 to engage the corresponding gap 29 in a locking- plate 30. The switches 13-18 may be controlled by manual push-buttons or by a punched record sensing device, e.g. as described in Specification 799,299. The shaft 3 may have a crank and a connecting-rod to convert the rotation into linear movement. The conducting surface of the drum may be divided into two parts connected to a double-coil relay controlling a reversing switch. By this means the homing movement of the drum always takes the shorter path.
