Abstract
523,803. Preventing ice-formation on aircraft. SMETTEM, K. R. K. Jan. 14, 1939, No. 1332. [Class 4] To prevent the formation of ice on the leading edges of the wings of an aeroplane having a watercooled engine, the coolant is circulated through a double skin d detachable from the leading edge of the wing e. The double skin is divided into an upper section d<1> which receives water from a vented header supplied with water from the cylinder blocks, and a lower section d<2> from which water passes back to the cylinder blocks and thence to the header. Baffles may be arranged in the double skin to prevent undue lateral movements of water. The double skins are divided transversely, and valve means is provided for causing the water to circulate only between the header and the cylinder blocks on starting the engine, through the sections of the double skin behind the propeller when the engine is warming up, or through the full length of the double skins for full power working. The Provisional Specification describes also an arrangement in which a retractable radiator can be lowered into the slip stream of the propeller when the aeroplane is stationary.
