517,928. Bending bars, plates, or tubes of glass. SOC. ANON. DES HAUTS FOURNEAUX ET FONDERIES DE PONT A MOUSSON. Aug. 10, 1938, Nos. 23566 and 23568. Convention dates, Aug. 28, 1937, and May 5, 1938. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXII] In bending a tube, bar or plate, a bending moment is applied to the tube &c. whilst a heating burner is displaced along the tube in proportion to the radius of curvature and the angle of bend. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a tube 1 is held by clamps 5, 6 and a mass 8 is applied to the tube. A sleeve 10 on the tube is maintained parallel to a sleeve 12 by links 11. A rod 13 about which the sleeve 12 swings carries pulleys 14 supporting a cable 15 connected to a heating burner 9. Theradii of,curvature of the pulley and the.bend are equal: In operation, the displacement of the burner in bending the tube to an angle x on a radius of curvature R is equal to Rx. A stop 2u positioned in the extreme position of the carriage may be actuated to sound, an alarm or to extinguish the flame. If cams are substituted for the pulleys .14, bends of decreasing &c. curvature may be formed or by rotating the tube during bending helical bends are produced. In a modification, Fig. 4, a tube 1 is mounted on supports 34, 34a and a mass 8 suspended on a cable, with resilient end mounting 53, engages a frame 46 applying the bending moment to the tube. A support 56 secured to the tube carries a pivot 57 on which a frame 55a is swung by a roller 59 engaging the tube. One leg of the frame 55a carries a heat retaining sleeve 58. A burner 61, mounted on a carriage within the tube, is .moved by a cable 62 attached to a mass 67. A cable 69 secured to the cable 62 controls the movement of the frame 55a. As the bending proceeds the burner 61 and the frame 55a are moved by the mass 67. Electric heating may be employed.
