Abstract
822,984. Bending glass sheets. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. June 12, 1957 [June 15, 1956; June 28, 1956], No. 18517/57. Class 56. In the bending of glass sheets to non-uniform curvatures including an area left substantially flat (particularly as in the central portion of a wrap-around windshield) the amount of heat on the part to be left flat is reduced by providing a heat-absorber member beneath such part and movable round thereto so that at times in the bending cycle it may be closely adjacent the part and at other times remote therefrom. Two forms are described. In Fig 5, the absorber comprises plates 61 or screens or expanded metal laminae mounted by parallel linkage 62 on the mould frame F and moved vertically by the engagement of followers 70 on cranked levers 66 pivoted at 67 on the mould frame with cam tracks 58, 59, 58<SP>1</SP> in the preheat, bending, and annealing zones 55, 56, 57 of the lehr 53, the abosrber being nearest to the undersurface of the central part G of the sheet when it is in the bending zone. In Fig. 11 chilling bars 110 are carried by links 112 pivoted within the mould frame 101 and are raised and lowered by the engagement of a follower 115 on the bar support with a cam 114 on a shaft 117 carried by and projecting beyond the mould carrier and having a pair of radial arms at one end for engagement with fixed stops projecting from the side of the lehr into the path of travel of the arms.
