Abstract
466,037. Tempering glass plates. AMERICAN SECURIT CO. Nov. 20, 1935, No. 32218. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1934. [Class 56] A device for supporting a glass plate in a vertical position during the operation of tempering comprises flexible metal members which engage the edges of the plate at points below the centre, and exercise downward pressure at points above the centre of the plate. The device comprises a frame 1 suspended from trolleys 4, which run along an overhead rail 5 to enable the frame to be moved through the heating and cooling devices. A number of glass plates 10, e.g. circular port lights, are supported in the frame by the flexible metallic members. In one arrangement, a metal band 11 in the form of a depending loop extends around the lower portion of a glass plate 10, and a band 12 extends across the upper portion. The band 12 may be attached at one end to the frame and at the other end to a pivoted arm 18 the weight of which provides sufficient tension to hold the glass plate in place. Alternatively, the band may be attached at both ends to pivoted arms 26. In another construction, a band 27 may be attached at one end to the frame while the other end is provided with a weight 30 to provide the necessary tension. Instead of the upper bands 12, 27, a bar which slides between the side members of the frame may be used to support the upper edge of the plate. A flexible metal band 40, or a chain 21, may extend around a glass plate 10, and be attached to bolts 22 which are passed through holes 23 in the frame. The use of a chain enables rectangular plates to be suspended. The band may also be suspended from the frame by a lazytongs, the weight of the plate applying the required tension to the band. The bands may be made of refractory metal, such as nickel chromium, and they may be insulated from the glass plates by means of facing strips of suitable material, such as asbestos. The insulation may be provided, also, by means of asbestos cord wound on the band.
