Abstract
Fabrics are rendered resistant to shrinking by applying solutions of natural or synthetic resins, or components thereof, which are hardenable by heat, the hardening of the resin on the fabric and the final treatment thereof, e.g. washing and drying, being effected whilst the fabric is tensioned and while preserving the desired final dimensions. Suitable resins are formaldehyde-urea or thiourea, phenol resins, aldehyde resins, in all stages of condensation and alone or mixed, and shellac. Those soluble in water may be applied in conjunction with known sizing, hardening, wetting or softening agents, or dyestuffs. Catalysts for reducing the hardening temperature may also be used. In an example, a bleached, mercerized cotton fabric is wetted and then passed through a 20 per cent aqueous solution of a urea-thioureaformaldehyde condensation product containing a catalyst, and squeezed until the fabric is twice its original weight; the fabric is then dried in a tenter at at least 120 DEG C.; it is then washed, rinsed and dried in the tenter so that its final dimensions are those desired.
