Abstract

Fuel composition for use in furnaces, e.g. blast furnaces, comprise a slurry of coal having a "nominal particle size" of 1/16 to 3/8 inch in fuel oil having a vixcosity of 75-1000 SFS at 122 DEG F., the coal constituting 40-70% by weight of the slurry. By "nominal particle size" is meant that the majority of the particles have a size approximately equal to the nominal size. In use, the slurry is maintained in an agitated state at a temperature of at least 150 DEG F., and is thus in a pumpable state.ALSO:Furnaces, particularly blast furnaces, are fuelled at least partly by a slurry of coal in a fuel oil having a viscosity of 75-1000 8 FS at 122 DEG F., the coal having a nominal particle size of 1/16 "\ba-3/8 " and constituting 40-70 weight per cent of the slurry. The slurry is heated to a temperature of at least 150 DEG F. and agitated before introduction into the furnace, and may be injected either into the hot air stream blown through the tuyeres of the furnace preferably through a lance into the tuyere opening, or directly into the furnace through the wall proper. The slurry replaces part or all of the normal coke charge in the furnace, preferably the former.
