Abstract
<PICT:1041962/C6-C7/1> A plant for producing liquid pig iron or pig iron alloys comprises a prereducing rotary furnace 1 and a shaft furnace 7 having its gas-off-take means below the level of the tuyeres 9. Ore and reducing material are charged through hopper 2 to furnace 1 fired by gas oil or p.f. burner 3, secondary air and low grade coal being added along its length, the partially reduced ore being discharged through hopper 4 to baskets 5 to be conveyed by crane 6 together with more reducing material into hot blast downdraught cupola furnace 7 wherein final reduction and smelting occurs. An oxygen enriched hot blast, together with gaseous, liquid or p.f. injection from nozzles 11 and fuel line 10, is supplied through duct 8 and tuyeres 9, the resultant gases and molten material being withdrawn through duct 12 to receiver 16 whence the slag and molten iron are discharged through tapholes 15, 14 respectively, whilst the gases are led by duct 17 to air heater 18, to preheat the air blast supplied to the tuyeres 9 through duct 23, before being discharged through chimney 19. In modifications a separate gas offtake between the blast tuyere plane and the hearth sole is provided, whilst the rotary furnace may be positioned above the shaft furnace to discharge directly into it.
