Abstract
The isobaric evaporator operates between two limits, the temp. of the hot source, e.g. the steam and the temp. of the cold source, e.g. the condenser. The evaporator incorporates a surface heat exchanger and a contact column. The number of stages of temp. drop between the hot source and the cold source is unlimited. The soln. to be evaporated enters the exchanger on the side connected to the cold source. A gas coming from the contact column enters the side connected to the hot source and flows countercurrent to the liq. Heat transfer occurs between the gas which is heated and satd. with solvent vapour in the column and the soln. which is cooled and concentrated by contact with the gas. The gas is then cooled and dehumidified in the exchanger, giving up its heat to the liq. and passing to the cold source. From there the gas is returned by a blower to the column. The hot source raises the temp. of the soln. entering the column to a value suitable for the heat exchanges. The gas used to transfer heat along the exchange system is at a constant press. The evaporator effects the total available temp. drop continuously, as distinct from the multiple effect evaporator and the stagewise expansion evaporator. It therefore gives a higher efficiency, i.e. wt. of water evaporated per unit wt. of steam consumed.
